That was a totally stupid response.

If I gotta explain to you WHY that is.....then I rest my case.

Just stirring the pot a bit...

I'm a Journeyman Machine Operator and have been for 14 years. I work in a bindery on mail line equipment. I make-ready, maintain, & fix/repair the equipment. There are atleast 20 different pieces of equipment at this plant and about 50 Machine Operators (just like me) who operate that equipment. None of us have shop manuals or machine manuals that tell us exactly how to take things apart or put them back together. We don't have torque specs, and I don't have a torque wrench in my toolbox either. The only people who have torque wrenches are the Machinests & Mechanical Techs. The only shop manuals that exist, are ones that show the blue-prints & part numbers.

How can you classify what's right or wrong when there are no manuals, no information or torque specs ??

It's not a matter of needing a torque spec for every part ever. I've installed things and built things that were "tight enuf"- When there is no spec- Yeah...Gotta make due.

When there is a spec- Why do it any way but right?? They didn't write that number down just because they felt like it.

Totally different note - I'm surprised there isn't a factory repair manual or something for your equipment. You are the operator, and they don't always get the greatest info. I fly a 3/4 of a million dollar plane and the manual is the size of an average college textbook for me...but there are 1000's and 1000's more pages that the maintainers get to use when they work on it.

There aren't repair techs or manufacturer specialists with additional knowledge?? Cause using an FSM- That's what you are getting the "specialists" information.

Sort of on/off topic here... you talk about doing things right.... took my truck in today for an oil change / tire rotation... Got it back and the left side tires at least HAD NOT been rotated - I'd gone to McDonalds this morning and rubbed the tire on the curb, and the rubbed tire was still on the back of the truck. Called the "mechanic" and he said he HAD rotated them... BS!! Now maybe he had taken them off, but he put the same tire back where he had originally taken it off from.

No, this probably won't kill anybody, but I paid for getting my tires rotated. If he was that careless, did he actually change my oil? Did he check everything he said he did?? Some of that could kill me (or someone else) when I have no brake fluid.... Did he put the right oil, amount of oil in there....

    New truck....so nothing yet
It IS near impossible to get a torque wrench on top of that damned shock bolt (top) and still turn it. Since you have to hold the tip still while you turn the rest of the damned thing. Who the hell thought of that???

Oh...Can't we all just get along?:p

By "rotating the tires" he probably lifted the truck, spun them around to make sure they "rotate", and called it good.

    I'm not a certified mechanic, I don't run a garage, nor do I work at a dealership.

on your car/truck its all about training do you want him to start cutting
corners now.He just starting out if he starts now where does it end
A question was asked and answered and it was answered correct
    training training training

    David,
I agree. This thread should have been over after the second post. But by the mentality on this topic, two of you may want suggest that unless the torque wrench has been calibrated every 6 months you had better not trust it; even on a rear shock bolt LOL. Better call the Snap On tool truck to come by and test your Torque Wrench before you decide to tighten down those rear shocks per FSM specs.

Good info- Didn't mention that before...

If you've got the tool- might as well know how to take care of them....Don't need a snap on truck tho. Why pay for something you can do yourself??

I agree with you about the torque wrench being calibrated
What does that have to do with you saying not to worry about
the torque specs on his shocks?

    Hahaha never thought about that....

I checked my oil filter and the thing was not hand tight - unless you're a super wimp

My whole arguement here overall - the ignorance of people who BASH others.
That's it.... I'm not pointing any fingers, just relaying a reminder. Everyone has their beliefs, oppinions, and experiences on how to do things the right way. Just because they don't match your own - doesn't mean we should bash eachothers intelligence.

Keep the forum fresh and with good attitude. Don't want to see this forum turn into the attitudes like all the rest.

This is a pretty old thread, but search was my friend. I think I'm going to double nut the top shock mount. I'm don't feel comfortable with just 15 ft-lbs and I think any loctite (even purple or blue) would make it to difficult to get apart later. Jam nut on this one I suppose.
