After many years of advising my kids to drive Tacomas, I finally went and bought one as a spare vehicle. She's a very clean '99 excab V-6 automatic TRD in cardinal red. Had hoped to find a 5-speed like the kids' trucks, but this one was just too good to pass up. Previous owners had done all suggested maintenance, and as soon as she passed the dealer's frame inspection, I bought her. This little Tacoma is the daily driver while my V-8 Sport 'runner is at the body shop recovering from a hard deer strike.

Everything works great except for the shocks, which appear to have 109k on them and don't do much of anything. No plans for any aggressive driving with this rig at all - on or off road. We have other vehicles for that. So my question for you other members is: "What would be the least expensive shocks I could buy that would provide the equivalent of the original ride?" The goal is to find a good product that costs significantly less than factory Bilsteins or aftermarket 5100's. A smooth road ride with minimal sway is all that's required.

Have searched here as well as TundraSolutions, yotatech, etc.

KYB Gas-a-just for ~$215 and Monotube for ~$240 from TireRack.

Tokico Trek-Master R/T for ~$220 on eBay. [All prices delivered]

    Suggestions?

For a good all around shock I would go with a heavy duty Gabriel gas shock. I have used them many times in the past and never had a problem. Any parts store should have them. Probly around $50 for the rears and maybe $120 for the front. Just a guess on the price.

I've always been partial to KYB. Been selling 'em for years. Good product, and hard to beat that lifetime warranty. I've seen some pretty rusted and abused shocks geet accepted under warranty.

    BONE STOCK! lol
Look on craigslist for a complete slightly used stock shock setup. They go for like 50 to 100 for the whole setup, front and rear

Yeah, with all the people that go 5100s with OME springs you'd think that you'd be able to find some stock bilsteins for cheap.

If you do get the KYBs I would suggest not getting the Monomax shocks, that is unless you like to feel every little bump, crack, crevasse, rock, pebble and twig on the road, those things are as stiff as they come. Stick with the Monroes or Gabriels if you're just doing street driving 99% of the time.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that members have enjoyed success with many different brands of shocks, including some that I guess are still made here in the USA.

Bulldog, you would probably enjoy my neighborhood. There are old jarheads everywhere. One neighbor is the daughter of Chesty Puller, who once said, "All right. They're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, and they're behind us. They can't get away this time!" Her husband held a hill near Khe Sanh for a few months while totally surrounded by NVA.

I believe the quote was: "We're Surrounded... That simplifies our problem."

Far be it from me to try to argue with another leatherneck, but this site ...http://www.military-quotes.com/chesty-puller.htm
...attributes that one to Gen. O. P. Smith.
No one can argue about whether Chesty had the right stuff to take the 1st Marines straight through the surrounding Chinese army, though.

Wish I could tell you that his daughter drove a Tacoma, but she has an import wagon and her hubby has a domestic pickup. btw, Lewis Puller, Jr.'s widow is a state senator here in VA.

4toys [still searching for the best deal on shocks...]
