Is it simple to employ dozens of employees, pay for health insurance, overhead, heating, electricity, building taxes... Yeah its a simple service, but think about all the moving parts that make that simple service possible.

You’re totally right, and the waiting room is full of people helping to support that business.

It was just sticker shock for me. This is the first time I’ve brought a vehicle to a dealer for anything other than warranty work.

Oh dont get me wrong man. That is a lot of coin for a fluid change. I would just do it myself to be honest, yes it helps that I save money by doing my own maintenance but I also know its done right and I dont have to drive back and forth to the dealer which is of value to me when I have 3 kids pulling me in all directions.

Most people don’t even know the color or engine size of the vehicle they make payments on every month, you think hey know how to work on it?

I agree my wife is one of those people lol she has to call me every time they do service on her vehicle cause they try to sell her something. I use the dealer for oil changes/tire rotations, certain maintenance that is beyond my capability, or expensive special tools are involved. I will usually get a quote for the work I want done and conclude its way to expensive and do the work my self.

*I do about 90% of my oil changes and tire rotations my self though

I was quoted $500 for a carrier bearing replacement, I did the carrier bearing + all three U joints for less than $200 using info I found off this site. Head replacement or something like that I would have the dealer do it and just have to cough up the money. I could probably do it, but I would rather not go through that learning curve on my daily driver lol.

You coulda got all of the gaskets for like 8 bucks on Amazon, for both diffs and tcase:

    https://www.amazon.com/GENUINE-TOYOTA-TRANSFER-DIFFERENTIAL-SERVICE/dp/B017V4BAXI

Also with advanced auto parts you can get 25-30% off at almost any time, with free shipping if over 25.. order up your 6-7 quarts of gear oil, use coupon, free shipping.. boom no fuss no muss. Maybe get one of those quart-sized pump thingies too.

Apparently head replacements are absolutely no joke on 2nd gen tacos.. people have said they've spent like 30+ hours with 2 guys on one.. but it also seems if you dont have a 2005/2006, you really dont have to worry much about it ever happening.

And this is what I'll do when I am no longer physically(or mentally) able to do my own maint. work. The biggest problem I have with dealerships is not their price, but workmanship. They either don't do what you paid for(happens more than people realize) or don't do the work correctly.

There's truth to paying what something is worth and if the OP was talking about diagnosing why his CEL is on or having brakes done it would be valid. But $400 for an hour or two of labor and $40 in parts isn't seeking fair compensation. It's taking advantage of people who don't know better (which is of course a separate rant). Your overhead is built into the hourly rate, that's why it costs $80/hr because tools, real estate and salaries aren't free.
