You know what really gives shops a bad name? When they try to quote you work for 1000$ that could have been done for 100. For instance, I went to a shop when my AC was screwed up. They said 'oh man compressor is seized, going to be 1000 bucks for a new one!'.. So I do some research here and find out its only the clutch hub, a part that can be bought for 10-50 bucks. AC works fine. They didn't even CHECK to see if the compressor was shot or not, they just looked at it and said it must be seized. This kind of thing makes me shitty towards shops.

My father had all his work done by a very large black man in coveralls blacker than his face, working on an oil soaked dirt floor. That man earned my father's trust in his workmanship, and in turn, I helped my father install a furnace in the mechanic's house. Those were the days that you could develop relationships with mechanics who knew you'd return again, and would recommend his work to friends.

There is a difference between going to a mechanic, and going to the dealer. Big difference. Implying there are not any honest mechanics around is nonsense.

Wasn't a cheap shot. Just stating the extra cost that comes with the other benefits. I audit for a mechanics union, so my job is to protect the union mechanics and make sure they are getting the fair contributions paid.

I implied no such thing. The nonsense is your going public with your mistaken belief of what I said.
Further, honesty is more than just looking you in the eye while quoting you an outrageous price.

My apologies if that was not what you meant. It seemed to me that you implied that people today couldn’t build an honest relationship with a mechanic, and that you compared a mechanic to a dealer, which are completely different. There are great mechanics out there, we just gotta look for them.
