I usually get 405-410 miles out of a tank. From full to sittin on E. The light comes on around 370-375 miles. I do 35 miles one way to work about 8 of that is on back roads. Like others have said I coast down hills and to stops. I keep the cruise set at 67 on the highway. My wife tells me I drive like an old man, but I'm not in a hurry and another plus besides the better gas mileage is a lesser chance of a speeding ticket.

With a 5-speed 2.7, my last reading was 490 miles, using 17 gallons of gas, for 28.8 MPG.

That's going to work & back, mostly highway miles, and driving like grandma at 50 to 60 MPH, keeping RPM's below 2000 as much as possible.

I think its important to mention that for some people , you might never get 400/tank.
The reasons are simple and not a fault at all. My end of the mpg is friggen easy, 1-2 people, and a speed limit of 65 mph on freeways where I'm at, but people do go 75, I have.....um,in other states.
Consder the DC/v6 driver that might not get over 400 a tank. If your state speed is 75, I betting you lose close to 2 mpg over Oregon's 65, ....now cart 3 people or a bit of gear and i suspect you're at a disadvantage from the get go.

one way to look at it is what is your baseline mpg, things like low tire psi, roof racks, extra addons etc , subtract from ths mpg. Getting that mpg back is likely free.Things that actually improve mpg can add up in cost and might not ever get you more than 2 extra mpg. MPG gainers at $ cost ; synthetic lubes, lower rolling resistant tires, performance air filter (if it works, my mpg seemed to go down).

IMO if you get 17-18 in the v-6 and want to get 400 a tank.Dont sweat it, you're doin ok. As long as you DONT try to waste gas, and DO try and consider how to get better mpg, you're doing it right.

X2. I might add that the route you take everyday has a very big impact on your average MPG. If you live in a windy area, hills, badly programmed red lights, etc, you will get lower mpg that the guy that has a 30 mile trip to work taking backroads at 50MPH without stopping.

Short trips is what kills mpg the most, then it's the speed you're going on highway.

How many gallons?... or what is a 'tank' to you?

If a 'true' tank, then 21 gallons, so at 330 miles is 15.7 mpg.
If at the E line, then 18 gallons, which is 18.3 mpg.
If at the warning light, then 17 gallons, which is 19.4 mpg.

So, please tell us the gallons to fill up and at what odometer mileage, so we are on the same page! Gracias!:p

I hope you meant the 3/4 tank line??? That would mean you are getting 25.3 mpg (126.5 miles/ 5 gallons)

If you were at the 1/4 tank line... then you have some problems! That would mean 9.7 mpg! (126.5/ 13 gallons).

355 miles!!!!!!! Not to shabby. I probably could have squeezed another 45 miles out of the reserve easy, but.....355 miles!!!!!! That is so much better than 250. So...I originally filled the tank from the gas light..17.5 miles. Drove 355 miles. Filled up with 18.4 gallons. 355/18.4= 19.3 MPG!!!! I'm completely happy with that. It's still hard to drive with the RMPs at 1000-1500, but it's getting better. Thanks TW!!

I'm wondering about the slow takeoff with manuals. I've read that the vehicle is most efficient at its torque peak (most power for the gas being used). On our trucks, the torque peak is at 4000 rpm. With the vehicle in the lower range <2000rpm, you aren't getting as much torque force as you do at the torque peak. One hypermiler blog I read, the guy tested his fuel use with a computer and found he used slightly less fuel by accelerating quickly vs accelerating slowly over set distance.

The goal with the manual is to get up to 6th gear as soon as possible. So the end result, though you're using less gas at 2000 rpm, it takes much longer to get up to speed to put it in 6th than if you ran it up to the torque peak and skipped some gears.

So the logic is accelerate quickly so you can be in 6th as soon as possible. Of course, if you're in heavy traffic, the extra fuel used to gain speed quickly will not be offset by being in 6th sooner as you'll have to be on the brakes. So in heavy traffic, accelerate slow.

    Thoughts?
