Rough Country 6 inch lift kit installed with strut spacers
    Hello,

The front Strut (shock shaft) is loose at the top and has damaged the Strut Mount Kit (top hat). The truck has a Rough Country 6’’lift kit installed with Strut Spacers used instead of lifted struts.

Since I plan for moderate off-roading, I would like to remove the strut spacers and install two new Coilovers (struts with coils) specifically designed for a 6’’ drop bracket lift . I am not sure if they have to be Rough Country brand or if any brand will do.

Any shop recommendations near Phoenix Arizona? Thanks for the help!

Is that picture of your actual truck? The top hat does not appear to be damaged. As for installation, any shop that normally works on lifted trucks can do it. You might want to check with Rough Country about fitment of other brands. They actually have pretty good customer service if you call them. If their shit is proprietary youll likely have to go through 4 Wheel Parts.

That is the exact shop that I ended up going to earlier today thanks for the recommendation. They ended up ordering me two new 6 inch extended struts from rough country.

and yes that is a picture of my truck.

Icon makes a set of rebuildable 6" lift coilovers.
Those ones you ordered will not have that feature unless rough country does it.

When I bought the truck it came with it already installed. I felt bummed out that it was getting so clowned on here at tacomaworld (Im new to 4x4 and lifts). But I did read a lot of reviews and most were positive for RC kits and struts after using them for years they said. A few videos I saw said they had bad quality control 10 or so years ago but have really improved recently.

I guess I'm rolling the dice on my luck. Fingers crossed.

This is accurate. They got a bad rep a while back but in my opinion turned things around. Their QC and customer service made great strides. I was working for 4 Wheel Parts when most of this went down and got to see all of it first hand. They used to be a shitty company that made shitty stuff but they are a decent company that makes decent stuff now. Seems like you are learning this (and general 4x4/lift knowledge) with an open mind which is cool. Take what people say with a grain of salt, esp. on the internet. Learn for yourself just like you are doing now. Changing the strut spacers out for full height coilovers is the best way to improve the suspension you already have and you will be happy you did it.

Great idea getting rid off spacers and using extended coilovers instead.

You could do the installation yourself even if you are only remotely mechanically inclined. It's really not difficult. If you are not mechanically inclined at all or work on your truck even for basic things, it's never too late to start learning!

Usually that applies to racing coilovers like ICON, Sway-A-Way ("SAW"), Fox, Camburg, King, etc. Very expensive but worth every penny.

It means the internal parts of the shocks can be rebuilt when they get worn out (with sealed units you have to replace the shock). Also, the internal valving can be fine tuned to your specific application, intended use, etc. This, in combination with the right coil spring combo can turn you suspension into a dream suspension.

Long term, if are get into wheeling more and more and do more challenging trails, a high performance rebuildable coilover with better and cheaper over the life of the truck (though initially more expensive to buy)
