Why is it with youth sports it's not how good you are but who's kid you are that determines where you wind up? No matter the sport, and that also applies to life in general.

Deep thoughts in the hot shop today

I spent lots of efforts putting everything away to their respective locations, yet I still needed lots of time to find them too. I finally decided not to buy any more gadgets :anonymous:

    Because of people... :pout:

Most people have difficulty making unbiased decisions - you find this in factories often.

The best qualifyed guy often doesn't get the promotion even though it would be best for the company.

The guy who goes on smoke breaks with his boss get the job 8 out of 10 times.

A guy I know real well told me when I was younger "if you're going to kiss someone's butt, make sure it's the right one". So much truth in that.

I was at a friend's all day Monday doing odd jobs for him, and garage organization came up.
I'm sure this is all common sense, but as my friend was saying, when you've lived somewhere for a long time and grew into your surroundings over years or decades, sometimes it's hard to get started when rethinking the familiar.

Here's some random thoughts as I sit in the shop on a cool dark rainy day. :notsure:

95% of my hand tools are in a big roller cabinet. It doesn't move far, but it holds a lot in a small footprint which frees up other shop space. I have a couple of messy drawers, otherwise, everything is sorted neat enough that I can tell if something is missing.

Around the shop I tend to group things together (mostly :anonymous:). I have separate shelves, drawers, or areas for:

    Automotive / mower parts
    Metal
    Wood
    Hand power tools
    Welding stuff
    Hardware
Consumables like drill bits, saw blades
    Tape, glue
    Reloading
    Paint
    Lubricants and cleaners
    and several junk shelves

If I'm looking for something in one of those categories, there's an excellent chance it's in that area, which narrows my search dramatically.

Stuff I tend to use outside of the shop like plumbing and electrical parts are stored mostly in tool boxes for portability.

I have an aluminum briefcase of automotive tools that stays in the truck, a pouch of general tools to grab for odds and ends, and a fair size tool bag with a few general things to pack more thoroughly for offsite projects.

Of the dozens of "leaders" I have had over the years there were some:

    Inexperienced
    Inept
    Outdated
    Autocratic
    Vindictive
    Favorite playing
    Sadistic
    Abusive
    Dull witted
    Short sighted
    Dishonest

Many others were mediocre leaders but at least relatively kind, fair, honest.

Only a handful possessed the ability to see "the long view" of managing - focusing on growing & grooming the people under them as well as the day to day performance for the company.

I probably will rather keep spend time looking for the tools than...memorizing the list, it gets my brain hurt.

I would have to write down the list -- and then find where I put it.
