I've lived in 2 apartments and 4 houses, 3 of which I bought, since 1992!

 

If the people I bought the house from 30+ years ago came back they would recognize just about everything - just as they left it...

... but a lot older & worn out.

 

What about the heating system ?

 

I find myself often thinking about bull dozing the house down and having a new one built.

We live in an RV for the 3 cold months, no reason we couldn't do it a bit longer.

 

Until last year - yes.

You know what they say:


There’s been at least 2 houses around my town where they called in the fire department to do practice burns this year. Disposal is reduced to ashes

 

The DNR has rules about fire departments burning down houses... at least in Iowa.

Has to be tested for asbestos, cannot be within 800 feet of another structure, all other demolition methods have to be evaluated, most of the time, the shingles have to be removed. There's like a 9 page application to do such things.

 

I am aware.

With that said, it's surprisingly cheap to have a house demolished and hauled to the landfill. At least around here.

If I was into running heavy equipment, leveling a house would be amazingly fun!

 

Big time power outages in the area starting last night about 10. It just sagged a bit here a few times but further north and west they went off line with some starting around 5 pm, many still off.

Ours went out this afternoon for 3-4 hours due to the supplier (grid) not the actual CO-OP lines.

So...

The B-I-L calls, he lives about 15 miles away. He proceeded to tell me that his power went off at 10 last night. After a lot of about how he hasn't opened the fridge the last thing he says is "I've got a brand new generator, never had gas in it..."

 

Don't waste your time turning him into this site and thread. It ain't gonna help.

He’s not so bad that he’d put it right next to the refrigerator because he doesn’t have a long enough cord?
