I even use it to verify my redraws from existing parts without CAD files. After I draw them it’s nice to make sure I didn’t transpose a dimension or forget to account for an edge of hole to center dimension.
I find it extremely helpful when I’m at a client’s location and need to get as much information as possible to fit up a matching component. Since I won’t have the luxury of going out and verifying it as I design it.
Im actually checking my work with it now!

Thank goodness we’ve had some work come in this week. This is how slow we’ve been, I brought the lead sled in the other day. We had some drops from a job a while back and they got cut/machined to fit for weight.

It’s made to hold a 25 lb bag of shot, which you can’t find and I’m cheap.

After painting them black I had to drive the last one in.

I forget what brand of rest I have, but more than a 20rnd mag interferes with the tray.

I can see that. We've only got one gun with a 20 rd mag and it doesn't get put on here anyway.

Whatever works! Your post reminded me that I built a stainless steel lead sled a while back I melted down a shit-ton of lead wheel weights and filled the box tube frame. That thing weighs like 70lbs. I’ll have to snap a pic of it to share.

We had a nice chunk of lead and I hauled it to the scrap yard a while back, I wasn't thinking. Please do share some pictures of yours!

Back to ball bearings; so many years ago during my apprenticeship, the first time we used liquid nitrogen to shrink fit a bearing race in, I asked the journeyman wonder what would happen if we heated up a large ball bearing red hot with the torch and then made a ramp to roll it down in there..what would happen? He looked at me with eyes big, and said don't even talk of such things, we've got guys who would try it.
Fast forward 20 years I told that story to a guy I trained under now. He said a good question for Dr. Noon....so I called and asked him. He said basically nothing because the bearing would form a gas shield of sorts around itself.
Dr. Noon was like encyclopedias of knowledge. I asked how did he know..he kind of chuckle and said he was a kid once and laboratory in school.
Edit; this original idea would have been 20 years ago and my question to Dr. Noon about 15 years ago.

The bearing drop test results; the 1" diameter ball rebounded to midway of the ball at 10". The 5/8" diameter ball rebounded to the top of ball 10". Both drops from 10" 20210120_131940.jpg
