I have upset the AutoCAD gods.

It's been like that for the last 10 minutes. Might be about time to kill it off.

This is exactly one of the reasons I'm hanging on to my desktop after they bought me a laptop. :D

I ran a test a while ago hatching the same area in the same file with a fresh instance of AutoCAD. The desktop did it in 9 seconds, the laptop took 43.

For stuff like that an AMD chip like the Threadripper series would benefit you greatly. You can get up to 64 cores with 128 threads to do all that calculation.

That's kind of the catch - we don't really get to pick much since they have standardized machines that they support. If they didn't do that, there would be a ton of different variations for computers that it would make troubleshooting (or even just re-imaging) a nightmare!

I did get the i7 with 16Gb of RAM instead of the standard i5 with 8.

Heck...even looking at a large set of electrical plans in .pdf makes my i5 thin client at work want to die.

    A thing or two...
What are the specs of your old desktop? It might be worth trying to get them to give you something comparable in a laptop.

My work laptop is a Xeon processor and 32gb of memory. Apparently, the new engineering laptops they're issuing are underpowered junk, so I'm glad they decided to skip me on the upgrades.

The laptop has an i5 and churns along alright but if I was at my old job doing electrical plans for large retail buildings, just shoot me.

Revit probably wouldn't stand a chance.

We have all of our plans scanned if they're old or pdf'd straight out of CAD/Revit if they're new. Some of those old sets are 150+ megs and don't make the laptop very happy!

To get anything non-standard we'd have to buy and support it ourselves, which for me wouldn't be that big of a deal since that's part of what I do for our department. There are some things I don't have the time or resources to work on so it's nice to have the "real" support team available but if it's not one of the supported machines, they can't touch it.
