The blue metal is half inch channel, the other metal was maybe eighth inch tube. 7018 stick welding, as that's the only machines we have that we can get anywhere in the mill. We do have a mig machine in the shop, but that's mostly running solid wire.

I used 6013’s for years, excellent rod for dirty, rusted, or painted metal. 7018’s are tougher to weld with for me as well but are excellent for capping a 6013 weld :D

Luckily it’s supposed to be 48° for the high today so most of it should be gone. The kind I like, it’s beautiful but doesn’t shut the state down

Just remember a 7018 is more of a "drag" rod. Strike and keep the puddle going! A little back and fourth motion can help out.

That's the exact reason I use them. The typical thickness of metal we weld around here is 1/8" with alot of sheet metal side pans cracking that I repair. The guys look at me like I'm a wizard not blowing holes right through it with the 6013 whereas they have a mess using the 7018's. I'm not a professional welder by any means, but I know the rod basics (giggity).

I’m not a professional either, I pretend to be one on the internet.

I went to the “learned to weld from dad on the farm” school :)

I had to learn stick myself basically. Started out on the Miller suitcase flux core welders in the field at my old job. When that company moved me to a manufacturing plant they had a stick welder and I took it upon myself to learn it. Worked out good in my case when I landed this job. We can't get the MIG upstairs and everything you need to weld is above that; the leads would never reach. We have a welder on a cart with long reach cables. Also have a battery powered portable for small jobs we got a couple years ago. I still put the stick leads on the welder downstairs despite the MIG setup. I'm just an oddball

That's why I keep like five spring kits in my spare parts sure. It never fails that you will send a spring to orbit at least once in your life or to replace a missing one like in your case

Thats pretty neat. I learned stick welding 14 years ago. Pretty much forgot it now. I want to get back into for odd jobs once I buy my forever home in the next few years so I'll have to reteach myself again.

Yeah that's tough, were still renting and probably will for next 5 years. Haven't quite decided if we're done moving. Trying to get the job and area right.

Renting can be rough too, my wife and I previously lived in an apartment on LSU campus and that was awful because neither of us were students and football season was tailgate party after tailgate party and we don't even watch football. Our current house is small but quiet on our .5 acre.

In my case it was once and done moving just twice in my life was enough.

The first time at 18 was not bad it all fit in my truck now after being here since 89 Amazing how the things add up.
