    hey everyone!

I’m looking to replace my 08 TRD due to being rear ended and was looking for any insight on making a decision between an early 2nd gen vs late 2nd gen. Or, if I can afford it a 3rd gen!

    Thanks!

Most folks like the 2009-2011 Tacoma, or the slightly updated 2012-2013.

If you're thinking of a new 3rd gen, make sure you take a long test drive and get some good seat time. I know a few folks who have sold theirs because of a strong dislike for the 3.5L engine (underpowered) and the 6 speed auto trans (shifts all the time) between it and the engine, the truck is constantly hunting for power and a gear.

Early (2005 to 2006, or up to build date 12/05 I believe) Tacomas (4.0 V6) had potential for head gasket failures and motor mount issues.

2013 or 2014 Tacomas got a lot more emissions stuff and some have been problematic and costly (I lack full knowledge of details on this, but remember reading it).

Thus, folks like 2009-2013 Tacomas best, at the moment at least. Good luck on your hunt!

Just to clarify a little, the 2012s had the issue with the smog pump/air injection valves. Toyota changed the ECU for 13-15 by having the pump run and purge on shut down to avoid damage from moisture. A lot of people still change the air filter on the smog pump from the little foam one they have to a k&n Cone style there's lots of how-to's on here.

As much as the 3rd gens get knocked, I really like mine. With the new ECU flash from Toyota, the truck drives very smooth. I will occasionally have some gear hunting issues but that only occurs in the mountains when I am fully loaded down.

Take a long drive in anything you look at.

ALSO, think about what you are going to do with the truck. For example, I probably would not have paid the extra $3K for the tech package had I know that I would be running a steal bumper making my sonar and BSM useless. The dual zone climate control and heated seats however are totally worth it. Sunroof is 50/50
