Payload I believe does not include the driver. The real payload is the GVWR of 5600lbs for all trucks minus your curb weight. The door sticker does not include about 175lbs worth Of payload for a driver. To help you understand, You can still add a 175lb driver before you start taking away from the payload that is on the door sticker.

I previously had a 2017 Ram 1500 Crew with 5'7" bed and now have a DCLB. While the trucks are nearly the same length, the Tacoma being narrower makes a big difference when it comes to parking in tight spots. So from the full size to mid size parking world, the narrower mid size truck does make parking easier.

As for the wheel base, I still need nearly the same amount of space to park, but still find the Tacoma easier to park in any situation.

I have never said that I wish I had a shorter truck or truck bed. However, I have wished I had a longer truck bed.

Then there is always the option of a trailer if you prefer the short bed for DD use, and find you only occasionally need a longer bed.

Long bed. I see no point getting a truck with a short bed. You skis and bikes fit length wise in the bed. You can sleep in a long bed.
Access Cab with long bed (yes i know thats the only size it comes in). Obivously go for long bed

Short bed is basically cargo space with no top. It's barely a bed man

Can we all stop calling it a long bed. There are two options short bed and regular bed. A long bed is 8 feet and you can fit a full sheet of plywood in with the gate up.

If I had a bus I would rent a U-Haul trailer if I needed to haul something. A cooler is about all you can haul in the bed of a bus.

    I know, huh.

Until Toyota finds a way to offer a bed “shortener”, I am sticking with a short bed...and use an extender if I need to.

Seriously, though. Toyota is smart because by offering a 5-foot and a 6-foot bed, it recognizes that there are distinct work truck and lifestyle truck buyers.

The combination of these two makes Tacoma a hit with younger and older buyers, with base and loaded truck buyers, with city slickers and off-road adventurers, and a perennial top seller.

GVW for purposes of rating includes everything: cargo, fuel, driver, passengers. But to my knowledge there's no universal standard for curb weight in light duty vehicles.

So payload (along with the driver) added above the weight Toyota states for our curb weight might be from a dry weight, e.g. empty fuel tank, and with no options on the truck. When calculating your actual curb weight for GVW you might have to add ~130 lbs for 21 gallons of gasoline, side steps, 120VAC inverter, tow hitch, etc.

The only way to know any of this really is to get on a scale before you start modifications.

2016 had a long bed but, never used it much. New 2019 has short bed. Anything I hauled in the long bed I can haul in the short bed. As someone already said, it depends on your usage.

The short bed looks better IMHO. LB can be useful but if you really need one then buying a 1/2 ton makes more sense.

If the manual DC came in 6ft bed, I would have bought that one. Looks kind of funny with the small bed imho. Still like my truck though.
