Get a Napier Sportz Iii Truck tent. Use that with an Airbedz (yes, lots of Zs!!) DCSB air mattress and you're all set!

No need to waste $$$ on a RTT, this setup is comfortable and only a couple hundred bucks.

Here is how I do it and it works great... you leave the tailgate open which extends the sleeping area.

Took under 60 seconds to install/remove. Most everything fit in long totes underneath. I'm 5'10" and slept fine (I generally bend my knees anyway). Sleeping at a diagonal is another option.

Been following this thread. Very interesting. A roof top tent is so much money (cool, though) but you need the right rack system too. For something I may not use that much it won't work for me.

Op, this video on the Napier shows some of the cool features on the inside and may be helpful:

I have one of these. It works out well. All my gear is kept in a couple of plastic bins, so it's easy enough to pull it out to put the tent up. I put down foam self inflating mats. Fits 2 adults fine, but not much more room than that. I like that it keeps weight low, but it does take a few minutes to put up and take down and I have to roll up bags and pads separately. I may buy an RTT eventually, but I have other things on the list first.

The Honda Ridgeline has an even shorter bed than the Tacoma DCSB and Honda has still managed to design a truck tent which fits the Ridgeline perfectly. It actually has a zipper where you can access the under-bed storage that Ridgelines are famous for while in the tent!
If people can sleep in the Ridgeline bed, I'm pretty sure you can figure out a way to sleep in the Tacoma.
Personally, I have the DCLB and I've already ordered a Snugtop shell, rubber bed mat, and two mattresses. I'm 5'11 so the long bed fits me just perfectly with the door closed lol. I'll never have to set up a tent or get a hotel room ever again! I can just throw the mattress and sleeping bag in the back and I will be set!

I'll check, I can't remember if I took any. It's a great setup, with the airbedz it was a comfortable night's sleep. Way cheaper than RTT, easy setup and compact storage. Win win IMO.

I don’t think people are doing it because they are afraid. Much of it is convenience. RTTs are very convenient especially if you are moving camp everyday.

IMO hammocks are uncomfortable. And it’s annoying trying to find something to hang your hammock from. Especially if you show up in the dark at an unknown camp.

I pretty much agree with you on everything else. But I really don’t find the ladder to be an issue. Half the time, I don’t even climb down. I just stand at the top and piss.

A $30 sil-tarp draped over the back with the tailgate down is my plan. Attach to the inside headliner w/ velcro, outside with some guy lines and clips, and call it good. If it gets really bad, I'll suck it up and sleep diagonal with the tailgate closed I guess.

I've spent more time than most in tents, and used to own a RTT, but decided that I'd rather keep it minimalistic, while still staying off the ground in a gullywasher, or dealing with ground bugs.

Gotta admit, I definitely had some anxiety going with my first shortbed, but it was the only way to get a manual w/ TRD off-road package in the dbl cab. Had to give up one thing, and the bed length was it. Plus I'm not a fan of the longer wheelbase or looks of the dbl w/longbed. To each their own I guess.

I’m with you @Tacotoast. I keep it pretty basic. Ground tent works great for me, sometimes just a cot on the ground, sometimes I just sleep on a pad in my bed under the tonneau cover :rofl:I’ve never slept in a hammock overnight but I’ve taken plenty of siestas so I’m sure it’s great. Bugs also aren’t much of an issue here so that makes a difference. I think a lot of guys get the rooftop tents and such to please they’re girlfriend/wife so that they’ll be more happy to camp, at least that’s the excuse they use. The tent in the bed makes very little sense to me.
