I recently purchased a TRD Off road in the standard bed and have discovered that so many things that I do and use it for that the bed is too short. As and example my R/C airplanes when boxed are too long for the bed and the snowmobile has a crazy amount of overhang, we also plan on camping and it would be nice to have a shell to get out of the rain so some extra room would be helpful. So… I am going to need to sell it to transition into a long bed. I have a few questions about selling a car. I have checked out the different websites for listing a car and as an example Autotrader / Craigslist / Facebook / and so many others are options look like possibilities. Any thoughts on what the best way to market it?

Check carvana first, they will send you a offer then come pick up the truck. No haggling, no tire kickers, no crack heads.

I've heard that some dealers are giving a crazy amount toward trade-ins for vehicles right now due to the supply chain issues they're facing. Before you sell it for cold cash, it may be worth seeing what they'll do on a trade.

Try going back to the dealer you bought it from and seeing if they want to buy it back, they probably will. Or find the truck you want to buy at a dealer and work on getting a fair trade in number to use towards the new one for a tax rebate, plate transfer savings and generally less headache dropping off the short bed and leaving with the long bed. In almost every state the tax rebate is enough inventive besides like NH, OR...?

Theres literally a plethora of people complaining about the short bed not being enough bed because they failed to research or physically check before buying, and new thread every day on trade in values and resale values. Try browsing this forum for like 20 minutes and you will have most of your answers.

People on this forum hype up the short bed as being just as capable as a long bed when it comes to hauling. But that extra foot really does make a difference when loading.

I've had decent luck with cargurus before. I sold my 4Runner on there. It's $5 (I think) to list it

Note this was in 2020. When I went to trade in my 2nd gen at the dealer, they offered me 2k, I was insulted lol. It was a 2009 with 175k miles that was paid off. Showed the saleman they were all over AutoT for 12-14k in worse condition. Walked away and sold it less than a week later for 9k cash (base model regular cab). 9k was a good resale for me considering I got it for 10 a couple years prior. In my opinion the dealerships are typically not there for your best interest and want to make money off you.

May be different these days at dealers but I see private sales that are more expense that dealers all the time. I'd post it privately for a reasonable resale for you (not for this ridiculous market) and you should get a quick and easy sale.

    Love my long bed

Depending on where you live it may be better to trade it rather than sell privately. When trading you pay tax on difference between trade in and purchase whereas privately you pay tax on full amount of purchase.

Should be able to just even trade it at the rate things are going. The used trucks are selling for 5k more than new

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
Blue Book, NADA, etc., then go to Carvana online and just make sure you properly account for the way it is equipped. Having all of that info will give you the negotiating info you need when talking with a dealer. I knew exactly what Carvana would give me and most dealers will match that if nothing else. I got great money for my trade when I bought my Taco but it was only a 3 yr old car with 32k. It seems like the way things are going right now, a dealer trade might be the easiest and most beneficial way to go but just do your homework on what your truck is actually selling for, not asking prices. Then, you gotta stick to your guns at the dealer when the negotiating begins.

A little bit of this, and a little bit of that.
Right now at my local dealership in Montana, they're offering OVER MSRP by a lot for trade-ins, and even just buying it outright from you. I picked my 3rd gen for 36k about a year ago from the dealership, and I had it at the same dealership I got it from for a TSS recalibration, and the manager asked if I was considering selling it, and that they would give me 50k for it right then, since they have only had 8 tacos total come through in the last 4 months, so they're dying for inventory. IMO, try to find a dealership that is hurting for inventory, because everyone and their mother wants a Tacoma right now, but they're impossible to find new from a lot of dealerships(unless you're going base SR or SR5). Check around for dealerships relatively close to you(or even far) that are hurting for inventory, offer a trade for it, or even just sell it outright.

Like mentioned already, make sure to look into what your dealer can offer you before making a decision to sell elsewhere. I inquired into a new 2022 T4R OR out of curiosity at my local dealer and was immediately offered more for my truck than I paid for it without even haggling.

just about the exact same thing happened to me. They're all dying for inventory due to the supply chain issues, and demand is higher than ever, so they're willing to buy just about anything from anyone.

Quick side note since it sounds like you'll actually be using the bed, keep payload capacity in mind! If you don't need a second row of seats, you can gain a few hundred pounds of capacity by going access cab 6 foot as opposed to double cab 6 foot.

My current ACLB has 1500 lb payload, the DCLB I briefly drove had 1100 lb payload. Very notable difference.

As for selling, like others said, check a few dealers. Otherwise, I'd talk to Carmax and Carvana as well.
    Good luck!

Facebook, Craigslist, Autotrader--list it on all of them. First person with cash or a cashier's check gets it. Do not hold it for someone who says they can come look at it in two days. Or go to a dealer and see what you can get on a trade-in, but you may get less than selling it yourself.

A cash and walk away offer? Or a trade in offer?

If cash, that's a great way to go.

I sold my wifes '05 Rav4 with 140k miles to Carmax for $4200. In and out in 2 hours. No haggling. No tire kickers. Recommended.
