hi! tig1 calling,I bought a 2009 tacoma and it came with the camera in the tail gate. But the proper mirror for it did not come with it.The "dealer" said that the boxes and tail gates are mass produced, and are used for more than one truck or model. There asking 800.00 for the mirror,am I the only one that sees something wrong with this?
Has any one else been through this?
The truck was bought in Saint John,New Brunswick Canada

    Thanks-- tig1

Sounds like a scam, if the camera is back there the package should come with a mirror that displays it. Either that or you have some double speak going on. Check the specs with toyota.com

If it is supposed to come with the back-up camera, report the dealer to Toyota via the 1-800 number.

I don't think it is a scam. It is probably just cheaper to make one tailgate with everything than it would be to do separate options.

I know I've got an assortment of extra wires running through my truck for options that I don't have.

I think that you could wire up the camera to operate with a different monitor that might be cheaper.

5100's all around - fronts at 1.75", 265/70/17 Bridgestone Revo 2, HID headlights and fog lights, factory skid plate, ss exhaust tip, tube steps, Access roll-up tonneau cover, Redline hood struts, 6 D-rings, seat MagLite, LED dome, fumoto oil drain, DTRL, fog light anytime, Kenwood/Clarion speakers, Pop-N-Lock 5300, LED bed lights and a few other things...
Do a search...you are not the first to realize this. I believe the wiring is even there...just not the mirror. The camera works but your mirror doesn't have the screen because you didn't get the package that includes it. There are mirrors you can buy with the screen in them or you can get a head unit that is BU camera compatiable - may take some tricky wiring.

For what it's worth...I don't know how I owned a truck without a camera. I won a bet from someone who didn't know I had it. I parked within 1/4" of a post and he was STUNNED. I told 'em I was real good a judging distance and "only needed to use my rear-view mirror".

Besides the awesomeness of the whole truck, it is my favorite feature (if that even makes sense).

EDIT...if you are not interested in having a back-up camera, sell your tailgate for a pre-09. That camera is worth some money!

Yes all 09 have the wiring and camera in the tailgate, the display mirror is on ebay with a larger display 3.5 inch for US $399, the wiring is there all you have to do is plug it in, takes 5 minutes.

Search on ebay Gentex display mirror

Don't pay Toyota $800 for the backup system. Everything you need is there except for the mirror. Check out this thread.

Does it list the camera on your window sticker? If so, they're trying to fook you.

Sticker the dealer removes when you buy the car, the one that shows everything that's installed in your truck? Or do they not have those in Canada?
