Go trade it for a short bed... You will lose maybe 3-4k... And deduct from that whatever it is you were gonna buy to shorten your truck (bumpers?) atleast 1k. Dont chop up your truck.

Truth is, do the work with the door shut, paint the wall a dark colour so you can't tell from the street, and don't say boo. Just like when I got a permit for my basement and I was told they almost never get people looking for permits for basements. Keep your mouth shut, and you'll be fine.

Look at it the other way around. The HOA rules are not for you, it's for everyone else who doesn't know how to take care of a house. When one neighbor thinks the front yard is a great place to park their cars, another thinks a couple of used appliances are fine on the front porch.......and you take care of your shit and you're trying to sell but can't get an offer because of the shit-for-brains-neighbors, then you might be wishing you were in an HOA.

Good luck shrinking the truck, OP. Unless you have a big need for the LB, I'd trade for a SB and be done with it.

    Or living in a condo.

Ya, it sucks, it's only a step above renting an apartment...

But no yard maintenance, when the roof leaks, the HOA pays for it, the HOA insures the buildings (my homeowner's policy is basically a renter's policy but it's cheaper because we own and are the only party with the keys).

HOA's are a sword that cuts both ways.
The impose limitations, but those limits apply to everyone and they are in place to maintain property values and the peace and quiet.
In the case of minor nuisances, they are an additional step that you can take between a maybe not so friendly chat with a neighbor and jumping into calling the cops.

OTOH, it all depends on the board that YOU ELECT.
If you elect a bunch of busybodies who are all up in your shit, then you have a "stereotypical" HOA board... but at the same time, YOU elected them.
If you don't like them, run for the board yourself, or campaign to elect someone you trust for the job.

    But what happens?
    We have 44 homeowners.
We need 22+1 proxies to hold our annual meeting in April
We need 11+1 proxies to hold our annual meeting in May
If we don't get that, we hold our adjourned annual meeting in June.
We have 5 board members. That means that we need ballots from only SEVEN homeowners.

When was the last time we held our annual in April? 10 years ago when we imposed a 20% dues increase AND a special assessment to pay for new roofing.
Since then, we've been rolling every year with fewer than 10 ballots.

Nobody gives a fuck, but they bitch when they disagree with the HOA.
If you don't vote, you have no right to bitch.
I've been stuck on my board since 1994.
    I'd welcome a break.
    Nobody even wants to run.
    I resigned 5 years ago.
4 years ago, the rest of the board members begged me to come back.

My condo is 1000 sqft plus a 1-car garage.
We purchased it in 1994 for $93k.
    It's value peaked in 2005 at $350k

It's the load bearing one. Maybe the others are modeled after Japanese paper houses.

I couldn't do it. When I come home, I throw my stuff in a corner (hockey bag, bike gear kids...) Id never find anything again.

"Honey, you see my bike stuff?"
"You tossed it in the corner"
*looks around* "You see the corner?"
