I'll give you my opinions in the order of your questions.

If you're looking for a shotgun as a home defense tool, then I suggest the Remington 870. I've used it quite a bit, and it's been practically perfect in reliability. Now, down to the nitty gritty. I don't like a pistol grip only shotgun, because it doesn't allow you to shoulder the weapon for a more precise shot. The only reason I'd use one is for door entries. The Mossberg you mentioned above sounds like it has a retractable stock. That should be fine.

"Precise shot? what the hell, man...It's a shotgun!"

Yes, it's a shotgun, but that doesn't negate the fact that you're responsible for every round you send down range. If you need to make that cold bore shot, and all you have is half a face behind a loved ones, then, brother, make it count. I just run slugs in my shotgun. Another requirement of mine in a combat shotgun is a white light. The light is just as important as the stock. It gives you the ability to identify and disorient your target. Majority of home invasions and shootings occur in dim light, FYI.

Sig vs. Glock, eh? Both are good tools, and both are reliable. I prefer the Glock myself because it has a consistant trigger pull. Majority of Sigs are DA/SA, meaning, the first shot will feel like a double action trigger and every subsequent shot after that will be single action. Personally, I prefer a trigger that has the same feel from start to finish. As long as you train, you can get used to any trigger. Another factor you should consider is the price. Glock is going to be cheaper, and that gives you some left over cash for magazines and ammo, and hopefully some good training.

Last but definately not least is training. Proper training from good instructors is more important than the tools themselves. The guns are just a means to an end, but whats really going to save your ass is the training you revert to in a SHTF scenario. Good training+practice+reliable tools+luck= survival

EDIT: I noticed you live in SoCal. As far as good training, I'd look into ITTS. Scotty Reitz is a great instructor.

As far as a shotgun goes, Remington 870 would be my first choice. The big 5 ads always look like a big savings, but the truth is, thats the price they always sell it for. If the shotgun is for home defense, and you won't be putting hundreds of rounds through it every weekend, then most anything you can find on sale will do. If you want it to last for thirty years, get the Remington 870.

As far as handguns go, you really need to shoot a variety and see what feels good in your hand. A lot of people reccomend a revolver for home defense because you can keep it loaded and there is never any stress on the gun. Some people beleive that if you keep a Semi Auto loaded it will wear the spring in the magazine, which is true in some cases. The best bet is to shoot and shoot a lot. You will fall in love with a gun one day and you'll know it's the one. I love Glocks. But i also own a handgun from every other manufacturer, so it all depends on you. Good luck.

we use the sig P229 DAK in the coast guard...personally i own a glock23 which is glock's compact .40..and having shot both weapons, i prefer the glock

glock is much better than the sigs not to mention the price, i bought my glock23 (which included 3-13rnd magazines) for just under 500$ the sig is going to cost you ATLEAST 600$

besides, glock slides have the Tenifer finish, that thing will never rust on you (Tenifer was rated on the hardness scale as being just under diamonds)

Both handguns are good, quality items, but i choose glock over sig any day

Go with the Glock, in a .40. You can buy a Lone Wolf conversion barrel and shoot 9mm for practice with no other modifications.

Our first shotgun was a Remington 1187 and we bought it used. We actually started shooting trap & skeet with it. Discovered we enjoyed shooting with it, that we went out and bought more purpose suited guns for trap/skeet.

The Remington 1187 is an autoloader (no pumping) and worked great.

Look for used guns at your local gun shops.

For handguns - we have a Beretta 92FS (9mm). Nice gun!
We also have a .22 (Ruger)

ithaca mod 37 featherlight browning design, used in wwII still in use today, mine is a police special made in the 1940's. so i'll be the odd man out, p.s. they still make this one, now it's a 3 inch magnum shell !! More power although it will cost you more, but do what I did, buy one that is old, it still works. bottom load and eject, good for left and right shooters. also its been made for 75 years, so it must be good

We didn't buy it from just anyone... We bought the used gun from BASS PRO shops. So - in a sense, we trusted that it worked and was fully checked.
It never gave us any problems.

So - I'd be skeptical of buying from 'just anyone'. Visit your local shops and see if they have used guns. It's probably the best way to 'try' them out before finding the exact gun that you want. Atleast you didn't spend fortune.

As far as I'm concerned if it is a shotgun it better say Beretta or Benelli. If it's a handgun it better say Glock or HK. There are no substitutions!

if you want man, go to a local range, alot of ranges have guns that you can rent for the day..fire off some rounds and find out which gun is best for you :)

i would always test out a gun before i buy it..ive tried shooting the springfield xd and i can shoot a tight group from 25yrds but for some reason, for that gun only, my shots were up and to the left...wierd..
