I am pretty light on the accelerator so I am happy how my Auto shifts even with ECT off. Either drive with the ECT button on or get a Tune. Also the 3rd Gen Auto needs to learn how you drive, so it should improve after a couple hundred more miles.

    Enough for now
try a tune brother! Also do not put on larger tires if you think the truck is slow now!

I never had issue with my 2016 AT any more then I’ve had issue with any other AT. The best solution, IMHO, is a manual transmission, but there are other options that might make the AT drive more to your liking.

The simplest is the ETC button that makes the shifting behavior more aggressive. On the aftermarket there are ECU tunes that change the shifting behavior and there are diff gears that change the overall gear ratios.

Seriously though....not trying to be a jerk.

My current Tacoma is my first one. I've had family members with a few. They are loyal Toyota consumers but not what I would call enthusiasts. I did a reasonable amount of research prior to buying and I heard about the auto trans complaints and decided on a MT. Why is this subject a surprise to anyone? Especially someone coming from an earlier Gen? And why does it seem like no one test drives anymore?

this has been well known since day one

    and you still bought it

The product started going downhill in 2005. More profit is made from selling a worse product.

the company’s job is to make profit. Which is what they did.

The only variable is a consumer buying it. Which is the only reason it exists. Because of the dollar that votes for, supports, and justifies it.

I like my transmission. Seems like you got a lemon. Trade it in on a Ford Maverick and move on.

I just drive with the ECT button on, when I remember.

Sport 3-4 is great around town.

The Tacoma transmission is not great, but my van is worse. Less power…. Fewer gears… a few thousand extra pounds.

My last vehicle was a manual, and my shifting sucked a lot of the time too.

I read about the terrible transmission. I test drove one and agreed. I test drove another one and agreed again. By the 3rd test drive, I liked the rest of the truck enough to ignore it with the thought that I would do a tune.

Now, I really don’t care enough to mess around with it.

That's what they are banking on.... reputation. 07 to a 17 here . Let's not hold the engineering to blame as much as the political aspect that says they have to make it that way.
Have a good day and welcome tw. Enjoy your. New purchase. :hattip:

If you are that unhappy, get it tuned.
If you are against tuning it, trade the new one back in on an old one?

Seriously though, a tune will fix 90% of your issue.
Should you be interested, we can help point you to the right people.

I’m happy as shit every time I drive my 23 Tacoma

If you want gas mileage, buy Prius
If you want sporty by Mustang
If you want to pull a big ass trailer buy 3/4 ton

but seriously, what fool buys a new vehicle and doesn’t test drive the damn thing? I put a deposit down on mine before it was even built. I test drove it the day I picked it up before I signed any paperwork I wasn’t committed and could’ve gotten my deposit back. I liked it, I bought it, I still like it.

As much as I love Toyota.
I have to admit, the 9 spd auto in the Ridgeline has a much better shift map than the Tacoma.
Again, OP would benefit a lot from a tune.

Agreed completely. Today has just been a funky day here. Seeing what pops up thread wise. I am just shaking my head.
