Should I add weight to bed?

How do you secure the sand bags? I picked up a couple last year and just left them in the back, but I'm afraid of them sliding around.

 

In my experience, if you have a 2009 or newer with TRAC in 4Hi, bed weight is absolutely useless. TRAC does a better job of keeping the ass in line.

 

Carrying sand has the advantage that if you need to, you can use it to get yourself unstuck. Shovel helps too, and some lined leather gloves from the feeds store.

 

weight will help somewhat, but most people leave their sandbags/tractor weights,cinderblocks in the back throughout winter. serious potential to become head smashers via the rear window if you get in a frontal crash once the snow melts and speeds get back to normal...just something to consider.

i used to keep ~200lbs of sand in the bed of my T-100 for traction, but found eventually that they actually caused the rear to want to slide out more when going around corners. i don't put any weight in the bed now and have yet to be denied by old man winter in my travels.

 

If you have true winter tires (Blizzak DM-V1, Toyo G02+ and alike) and you have 4x4, you don't need to put weight in the back.

 

If you do put weight in the back like I do, make sure it is secured. the worst thing would be for the weight to shift on the slick stuff. that can toss you off the road faster than hitting black ice.

Drive sane and use good judgement.

 

Weight does help a little especially if you have a heavy foot on starts. We don't get allot of snow in central Indiana, it's funny to sit somewhere & watch people take off @ stop signs the more they spin the more gas they apply.

 

My brother commandeers one of those parking lot cement curb bumper thingies. He puts it back in the spring.
