Yea honestly I’d also consider Frontiers. They’re just about as reliable as a Tacoma and you avoid the Toyota tax.

Just watch out for transmission issues from 05-07.

If it has long travel suspension it has probably been beaten on… that price is high for a truck that old with that many miles. You’d be better off finding a newer 2nd gen outside of the head gasket issues, if your patient I bet you’d find one with lower miles too for the same price. Hard pass

2005 Tacoma owner here. They all need new head gaskets. They all leak at least a little, and many completely blow eventually. The original owner’s dad was a mechanic and put some GM head gasket sealer pill in the radiator on mine to mask the symptoms so she could sell it before it started leaking again. I got scammed. It’s a terrible job to do yourself (ask me how I know) and really expensive to pay a shop to do.

The A/C compressor also goes out on them easily (weak design) and requires total system replacement if it does. The manual transmissions that year suck as well and are prone to failure. All things to consider.

It’s a great truck otherwise

Only you can decide what it’s worth to you but I would pass. It already has 200,000 miles on it and like the other members have said if it has the long travel suspension is probably been off-road fairly hard so it’s definitely going to have more wear and tear than the average truck. It’s the sellers property and he has the right to ask whatever he wants for it but adding mods does not increase value of the vehicle you’re still buying a 2005 Tacoma with 200k so I would start with the bluebook value and negotiate from there depending on condition and how you feel about the modifications.

Only if it has an "overlanding edition" badge on it, will it fetch 20k.

That is incorrect. There is a small percentage of 05-06 Tacomas that have head gasket issues. The 250-300K 2005-06 posts get no play. Every problem on a 2005-06 is head gasket related according to TW.
The price for this truck is a bit high, but supply and demand.

Well after what everyone has to say I will probably pass. What’s the best second Gen year to look for?

I may try and find a 2015 with low miles at this point and build it myself over time.

I have an 05 with 186k miles and no head gasket issues. Also no AC issues. I think I've read many times that if you haven't seen it after 150 or so you may be in good shape. So I'm not ssure they all need new head gaskets as mentioned above. I'm also the original owner so know the maintenance history. I'd be comfortable buying another 05 if I had someone I trusted check it out and verify it. The market is crazy.

14 and 15 had the backup camera in the HU, 13s are good, I believe 12s had some issues. Before that is pre-facelift and doesn't look as good. Good luck! 19 for a 200K+ miles 17 year old truck was ridiculous

I paid 9500 for my 2009 with 182k miles. I only bought it because it was in good condition with a new frame. I've done a lot of upgrades so far and I'm really happy with it. 19k for a 2005 is just too much.

That's way too high even for covid. My buddy has an 05 v6, he's the original owner, did meh maintenance at best and has 298k miles. Paint (white) is almost completely flaked off/peeling

I purchased my 2011 brand new and have been absolutely meticulous with maintenance and repairs.

It’s been one repair after the other since 100k miles.

I am at 150k right now and I’ll be looking to replace it soon.

the inconvenience is outweighing the cost savings.

    no chance I buy a 2005.
