Honestly.. I haven't been bothered by it. Best thing to do is drive it and see if you like it or not.

I've had maybe 0.5-1% of my customer base complain about shifting, don't let the internet scare you.

I sure you did a carfax on it but if you didn t do it. Check it out in person drive it . Crazy people do make impulse decisions. Don t let other people fill your head with all kind of reasons the truck is a lemon or troubled truck they all are not . Mine has been a good one.

All you have to do is realize it is a small engine with a 6 speed transmission in a somewhat heavy truck.

The damn thing is going to shift, that's how it was designed.

I didn't pay attention to the tach when I drove them but I wouldn't doubt what at 65 MPH the truck is just at a little over idle speed, not much power there.

    Working now a list
I replaced my 2014 F150 with the 5.0, mostly due to having to deal with issues. Looking back they were no where near the Tacoma problems.

While I love my 2017 Tacoma TRD off-road it's a major bummer and strain on my time dealing with the issues.

Had I done better research prior to buying the Tacoma and discovering the issues people are struggling with like the rear differential howl, tranny erratic shifting, trip meter resetting, drive line vibrations, transfer case getting stuck in 4 lo and squeeking leaf springs I would not have risked buying the vehicle.

The TRD off road is an incredible and impressive truck and has gotten me through many snow storms but releasing a truck to the public with all these issues is just flat out wrong.

My lack of research is 100% my fault but on the flip side I expected the Tacoma to be as trouble free and bullet proof as my FJ Cruiser, so far that's not the case.

I would recommend you wait till Toyota resolves the issues.

    Personally I'd keep the 1997 2.7L. Maybe buy a 2nd gen as a DD

This seems like the best opportunity to drive it for 7 days relatively risk free. I can't see why you wouldn't take that option if you like this truck. If it turns out to be something you don't like......just give it back. Many don't have the issues noted in many of these threads, but it's good to be aware as long as it doesn't cause paranoia or cause you to avoid something you might like. My OR has been great. Just try it for 7 days and don't look back! Good luck.

I would definitely check that Truck over as someone was willing to take a financial haircut to unload it after only 2000 miles.

That's baloney. You need to be careful about what you believe on this forum. My tranny is fine and so are tens of thousands of others. Some people come to this forum to whine. I recall a poster complaining that the tranny had too many gears. I think Toyota's main problem with the 3rd gen Tacoma is that it's marketed towards Millennials. (I hate the cruise control! My front end whines after I lifted my truck! The paint is too thin! The oil filter is stupid! I can't believe it doesn't have power seats!)

    Sheeeeesh.

Yes, the tranny is fine if you don't mind erratic shifting and cruising at 70 mph at 2500 RPMs. As for the power seats -spending that much money for a fully loaded truck with no seat adjustment other than back and forth is a bit disappointing. Oh, and let's not forget about the ponderous steering. Other than that, 35-40K for a truck that handles like a pontoon boat is a great idea!

Congrats on being the first to shit in this thread. Ever notice that's it's not the "trouble makers" or "usual suspects" that wind up being the first person to attack people with different feelings than their own?

So my wife has a 2014 Fusion. 4 banger, non-ecoboost, and a six speed auto. Just took a 600 mile round trip from Southeast Kansas to SW Nebraska. Hills. Wind the entire way. Set the cruise on 80. Not ONCE did that car hunt for a gear. Not ONCE did it drop down to 4th to maintain speed, and not ONCE did it not want to upshift.

You say that the problem is it's marketed to Millenials. When you take a 4L motor and 5 speed transmission (with a 0.71 OD ratio) out of a vehicle, make the vehicle heavier, and then put in a 3.5L motor with a six speed transmission (with two OD ratios of 0.69 and 0.5), physics becomes the issue, not some Millenial.

But I too am a Millenial. So I may just not understand.

Just to echo everyone else... there's a reason it only has 2000 miles on it and I don't think it's because it was a lease. BUT you have it for 7 days. Drive the snot out of it and see if it works for you!

Seems like too many people bought a 3rd gen without driving one first.

    (Disclosure; I drove two.)
