I could have cared less about a new vehicle. The 'thing' I was driving for 10 years only had 45,000 miles on it. The wife's new Subaru was paid off.
She got the idea that we needed a truck to haul lumber in for her wood-shop projects. Took one out for a test drive drove home she handed me
the checkbook and said go back, and don't come home without it.... LOL

Yea, she's the smart one in the house.

Anything she wants..... don't get between her and a true piece of lumber you could get hurt.

We make a good team. I worked like a dawg while she raised the kids and acquired 3 Master's degrees - now that I'm retired she's
making really big numbers and the kids are gone so I'm doing house-work and fetching lumber for her weekend projects. We got
30 years into this thing and it has worked out. She'll retire soon and we'll drift off into the sunset.

5 grand, yes, if you can do 90% of the repairs yourself going forward.

12+ grand -- nope. Nope, nope, nope.

I'm currently driving a base model 2013 Subaru Impreza manual transmission, 150K miles on it. I'm hoping to keep plugging away on that.

This forum is insane sometimes. If people come on and say the tacoma is unreliable, they scream about how reliable they are and how they'll do 300k miles easy. Ones pops up for sale with 250k and all of the sudden everyone thinks the reliability tanks at 100k. The only people you should be listening to are the ones who say check for maintenance. If it was properly maintained, it likely has a TON of life left. You might (probably) will be replacing injectors, belts, hoses, etc.. but all of those things are cheap compared to a new truck.

I dont plan to stop driving my truck at 250k miles. I still drive my 2000 4runner that has 275k on it, and that truck DIDNT have a good maintenance history when I bought it. I was just broke and needed a car. Bought it with 198k and it threw a couple injectors, and has been 100% fine since then. It also is supercharged and has been since 10k miles, so it didnt live an easy life.

People are quick to say how toyota lost its reliability blah blah blah but have only evidence to the contrary. Sure, theres been failures, there have been issues, but all told these 3rd gen trucks will be on the road for a VERY long time, and we'll be seeing more and more making it past 250k every year. If I were you OP, I'd get it inspected - if everything looked good, I'd buy it. Then I'd spend 2-3k additional on all new suspension, brakes, fluids, belts, tires, and get really familiar with my truck by putting all the new parts on.

If its been maintained, its got another 100k in it easy.

Rule to me is like 10 years - 100K miles.

That taco was a work truck as you mentioned, and has 251K miles in 6 years, by this January 7 years. So like 20+ years of miles shoved down into 7 years.

Besides companies try to save money and their maintenance was probably not good, if I have to guess cheapest oil/filters used stretched on maximum intervals like 10K or something.

V6 is probably still okay but I don't know man, how much do you trust your company with stuff like this? I mean whole point of any business is to spend as least as possible and get as much as possible .

You're using an example of an old Toyota to prove that new ones are reliable? Ummm, ok.

Was your 4R a company vehicle for a quarter million miles and did you pay top dollar for it?

I appreciate everyone's replies and the discussion, entertaining at very least. I had my mechanic friend look at it today and talked to another mechanic and he thinks it's a good deal after looking it over pretty thoroughly but not as far as a compression check. The truck is clean as it possibly could be. Sure, it needs some basic things and will continue to, as all cars do, but, it was very well maintained by the company and I have most of the records to validate that. No obvious issues. I'm debating a compression test though but likely to pull the trigger. Mechanic is of the mind that it will go another couple hundred K with the proper care. I do think it's been well maintained, especially for a delivery/company vehicle, although I do appreciate that this is not the norm. I want a truck but don't want a note. This is a solid opportunity but I do realize that it doesn't seem that way on the face of it so understand the pushback from most of you or that it's not how you would do it. Wish me luck. $11k price is as low as they'll go.
