Most trucks will hit that with proper maintenance.

Besides that, the cost of used Tacomas, and the fact newer is generally better, I see no reason to buy used.... especially not one that much older.

When it comes to reliability I don't think you'll be disappointed with either decision. I think the best bet for you is to drive both, in the configuration you want. Then look over your finances and make the decision on which on you like best and which makes the best financial since to you. I personally didn't like the styling of the 2nd gen's, but loved the 3rd gen's. I've been very happy with my truck.

Love my third gen. This is my 5th toy truck and all have gone over 200K miles. Hoping this one will too.

Hard to find low miles and decent pricing. What eventually pushed me to buy new. Rather be sure I know where it's been. The extra $$ was peace of mind.

Both great choices in my opinion. Shop around and let the truck pick you.

I previously owned a 2010 V6. It developed a lower ball joint leak, steering rack leak, A/C line leak, and either a PS pump leak or timing cover leak, all before 70k. This was with meticulous maintenance. :notsure:

I prefer the 3rd gen for its newer interior, extra power, and TSS (very helpful on the 3+ hour drives to get to off-road trails).

I drove several 2nd gens (2012+) and several 3rd gens when I was shopping. It was an easy decision for me after driving the 3rd gen. I love my 2018.

I drove a 2012 TRD Sport, DCLB for a couple of years. I now drive a 2018 TRD OR, DCLB. I miss the 4.0L V6. Would go back to it if I could.

3rd gen. 2nd gen isn’t even official Tacoma canon as far as Mr. Toyoda is concerned. Seen those fender well shapes? Ghastly.

The reliability of the gen3 trucks should be as good as the gen2. The 2020s should have most of the bugs worked out just like the gen2 had the bugs worked out by 2012. The biggest difference is the performance. For me the weak bottom end in the 3.5L was a deal breaker but that's me. If you're ok with the way the gen3 makes power, then buy new. I'm sure it will last you for years. If you're not big on power then get the gen3 with the 2.7L. I heard they are bullet proof.

I'm glad my '17 doesn't have all that safety crap on it. I drive a new Camry at work, and absolutely hate the lane departure feature. I'll control my own steering wheel, thank you very much!:angrygirl:

The tacomas don't mess with the steering wheel like the camry and rav4.

Up to you, but I was in the similar boat in late 2016 to replace my hated 2014 CR-V. I first started looking at used Tacomas and found a few I did like. I really like a 2015 OR DCSB MT and test drove it a few times. The 2ns time, I said fuck it, lets try the new trucks. The dealer had a 2017 Sport DCSB MT on the lot. Drove it and well we can guess which one I came home with. Overall, can't go wrong, but get a MT

It’s too bad that Toyota didn’t stick with 4.0 V6. I had an FJ Cruiser with the 4.0 and loved it.

It means if the 2nd gen was one of the children, pops wouldn’t pay for its college on account of its stupidity.
