Another thing to consider; here in the states, it’s hard to find a bank that will loan and an insurance company that will cover vehicles w a salvage title.

No way in hell I’d buy one of these to save $5-7k. Risks and rewards; much much more risk than reward here. If you can’t afford the going rate, yeah, I’d look at one you can, rather than going w what could very well be a cobbled together POS. And unfortunately you’ll have to buy it to try it, in this situation.

    This^^

It's too much money to have such a strike against the overall value like that..

If it were a 8-12k vehicle that would be a different story

Anything with a title issue I know I’ll never get my money back value wise. Something I’d keep in mind in case I think I’ll need to change or not out of a vehicle later.

Beat me to it. Just what I was going to suggest he verify with insurance and lender.

Rebuilds can be great buys under certain conditions. One of those is being 50- 70% of wholesale pricing.

I won't be borrowing any money so that's not an issue. I can't see insurance being an issue either but I'll give my provider a call and ask them

If you have enough to get either of those without borrowing, I would suggest using it as down payment and getting a small loan on something with a clean title if possible.
Even if it’s not a Tacoma this time around you could get something else that has an actual resale value, and then sell it when your clean dream taco is available.
Don’t settle for something just because it’s all thats available at the moment and you need a ride. You’ll never be happy. That’s how I wound up with a red double cab short bed…

I had a 2017 and traded for a 4Runner due to the constant hunting for a gear on the transmission. I then traded the 4Runner for a 2021 Tacoma. I am amazed at the difference between the 2017 and 2021 Tacoma. I am getting about 4 more MPG with the 2021 over the 2017 and have the power needed for me and no more hunting for the correct gear. Just my 2 cents.

A choice between two rebuilt titles can be like choosing between getting kicked in the groin with a shoe or a sandal. Unknowns include severity of the wrecks and workmanship of the repairs, so you’ll really never know which is better or worse. Any constructive or reliable advice on purchasing a ‘17 vs ‘20 would based on neither of these two trucks having been wrecked.

What benefit would the additional safety features on that ‘20 be, if its frame was in worse shape than the ‘17, as an example.

You need a new ride fast but some of the worst decisions we make are under duress. There’s some good advice being shared- I hope it works out in your favor- good luck!

Sounds like you want to be talked into it. Myself like most above would NOT get a rebuilt. It’s hard enough to get a good used Tacoma as most people keep them

No way in the world would I buy a rebuilt one but if you must the 2020 is easily the better buy.

Rebuild titles are always risky . I think I would do a small loan on a brand new one . It will pay in the end if you need to sell it later you will always get good return . Pay once cry once kind of thing. It would be my luck thing would go sour for me . Now like others have said it you were getting it for 8 or 10 k dollars that’s different.

I keep hearing all these horror stories how bad the 2019, and earlier auto tacoma's were. I've had nothing of the sort with my 2020, its got plenty of low end, and up top. Imo, judging from my truck, I can't believe they could build one much better.

I'd test drive them both and inspect the damaged areas well.

If you still can't decide and money doesn't matter, I'd probably go with the 2020. The 2020 was refreshed but the 2017 was the 2nd year of the 3rd gen so a lot of issues hadn't been worked through yet. I haven't had any drivability issues with my 2017, but the dealership has found and fixed the timing cover leak, head gasket leaks, and a leaky water pump. I also had the 3rd brake light addressed under the campaign.

i was going to respond similarly, but chew rephrased it more appropriately.
they can be fixed correctly--toyota publishes repair specifications for every part of the vehicle. but generally not for a profit.

i wouldn't consider a branded title vehicle unless it's 50% or more off the standard pricing to justify any future problems. if you can get a $40k truck for $20k, that leaves an easy 20k margin to correct or alter it to make it work correctly, or, barring everything works, it's sort of 'paying' for the branded title. because if you ever go to sell, or update insurance, it's likely going to be close to a $20k hassle.

Just depends. I've personally owned a vehicle with a salvage/rebuilt title and the issues I had with it had absolutely nothing to do with where the vehicle was damaged (front end collision and problems with rear brake calipers). But that's certainly not always the case.

also prior to 2019 the crossover coolant pipe and the timing chain cover leak and tranny low on fluid. i know this is still a issue also on later models but the issue was discovered with the 16.17,18. they tried to adjust to fix. 16&17 were working the bugs out years.
