When I was in the market for a truck in September it was between a 2013 trd sport dcsb for 24k with 60k miles. & for a 2017 sr5 it totaled to 33k otd.

Gas mileage for the 2nd gen wasn't that great compared to my old 2011 ram I had, but the 3rd gen gets me 21 avg mpg.

People bang on the transmission all the time but I for one understand it's a 6 speed auto not a 4 speed. So obvi there's gonna be more gears to go through. When I regularly leave a light 3rd fear goes low into rpms which is that no torque feel, however that's for mpg reasons. I don't mind it tho. If I do, ect button.

The new tec in the truck is great. I have the upgraded head unit, so it's all touch, I Bluetooth all the time & gps at times, even find the weather & traffic app useful.

I'm 6k miles deep. Don't regret it so far :hattip:

    Hahaha!
There's video proof that ONE guy has a smoke issue and that's the deal breaker? C'mon man, I know you're just having fun but that made me lol!
I'm not sure what my little 3.5 makes, cause I'm tuned :) What does your little 4.0 make without a SC?
Shit, these V6's are all puny and nothing special. Hell, in my day most everything below 6.6 liters was a "small block". V6s were for economy and didn't belong in a truck (there were some straight sixes that fit the bill though). Then GM turbocharged the 3.8 and put it in a Buick.
BTW, there are a couple of FI options coming down the pipe for the 2GR. Be sure to keep up with the times!

In my day if we referred to an engine by liter size we were automatically excluded from the club.

Yeah I was definitely poking Tacoma2016 because he was so defensive, and because he street races a Tacoma, lol. I'm guessing he's in high school. We all raced whatever we drove then and swore whatever it was, was the baddest thing on the street. I started out with a '70 Cuda with a 383 and a Carter AVS four barrel. The thing was an unqualified POS. Then I was lucky enough to get a '70 Challenger T/A with the 340 six pack. ( 3 Holley 2300's) I drag raced that for several years getting into the 12's which by todays standards is slow, but it was normally aspirated and racing at 4500 ft, not to mention being on a high schooler's budget. After that I moved on to SCCA racing which I thoroughly enjoyed. In SCCA I was able to win 7 Divisional championships in 10 years, but could never close the deal on a national championship. Racing against guys from California and Florida who race year round non stop is tough when you live in a state where race season runs March thru October. In drag racing the faster your car is the less time you get to do what you love, and the worst part....for every 10th of a second you improve the next 10th costs you 10 times as much money, so the move to SCCA made total sense. The bonus was with the contingencies I made from my sponsor's, I won enough to pay for my racing, hotels and fuel costs. In that type of racing that's about the best you can hope for. My last truck was a 454 Chevy which I used to pull my race car, so you might understand why I laugh at the thought of racing a Tacoma 6 cylinder on the street.
And while the video I posted was a jab at T2016 the smoking issue on 3rd gens is an issue with all of them. They were all assembled the same way. I'm sure it's just an issue with putting a car engine in a truck and operating it on angles that the engine was never designed to operate on. What's likely happening is oil is running down one of the PCV system hoses and going into the intake where it's ending up in the mixing with the incoming air and fuel mixture. I'm sure they'll have a recall or a fix for it soon, because it is a known issue.
Truth be told, I love all 3 gens of Tacoma and bought this 2015 after I retired because I wanted a overlanding truck that I could rely on in my trips out to BF Egypt, and because by my standards, the gas mileage is incredible. The proven record on the 2nd gen definitely won me over and in the end, the best deal I found on a truck with the complete off roading package was this 2015. So hey, drive your Toyota of choice, weather the friendly jabs from those who own different models and keep smiling!

My payment for brand new SR is not even 40 bucks more a month. I did want the SR, cuz SR5 ironically doesn’t offer a manual.

For comparison sake let’s say we bought our trucks the same time, one year ago. 3 Years from now (2020) your truck will be paid off and 9 years old. One year after that mine will paid off and only 5 years old.

Yes I paid more for mine, but when we’ve both paid them off mine will have generally fewer miles and more life left to give.

I looked for almost a year and as one of the posts said, used Tacomas 100k miles cost you in the mid 20K. I know it hurts but i went ahead and bought a new 2017 off road and i have about 9k on it and really like it. What got me wanting to get a tacoma was my sons 2006 tacoma off road. It has been an great truck. So I sold my F150 that I did like, and got a tacoma and have doubled my milage and loved the truck

I've seen the 40 pulled for fridge installs but the 40 isnt big enough for my pup. Hes only 6-7 months old and likes to lay across 2/3 of the back seat when we hes with me. I had someone in my backseat that couldnt/wouldnt control him so I had to while driving on unmaintained roads while out camping. I wasnt to happy having to reach into the back seat to get him to calm down on rough roads. Its easier if I eliminate the seat so I dont have room to put anyone else back there.

Why not get a Double Cab with the long bed? Personally I would never consider buying a truck unless it was Crew cab with a 6ft box.

Although I dig the look of the DCSB and ACLB.

At the time, the LB was only in a DC Sport or SR5 trim levels in the crew cabs (2013 US). I wanted the OR trim package after owning a 2006 SR5. I agree though the LB crew cabs are very nice. I prefer the looks of an AC or a regular cab overall though. To me it screams truck! Haha

NrBeal- was in that dilemma. I bought new 2017 sr5 v6 4x4. The miles were high on used for the price/ratio to new. If ur talking 4 or 5k in price, opt for new. That’s the beauty of these Tacos they hold value. Who’s knows what the previous owner did or had done. Always go new. Bought access cab - divorced only me and son. Had to be real with my situation- always more room better. Every trim level on these babies price marches upward. 6 foot bed a must. Camp, hunt, pedal. Not a true off roader. Upgrades can be expensive. Making payments gotta stand fast and concentrate on that. But. Ride quality excellent. She’s a keeper.

Check Car Gurus. They show you what the best deal is compared to NADA/KBB. I got my 2015 TRD-Sport with 82k miles for 23500 out the door, no trade-in. Bought it from a Chevy Dealership of all places lol. Previous owners traded in for a Malibu

There's another 15 TRD-Sport but in a short bed at Little Apple Toyota over here in Kansas for 23900 if you're interested. :D Tell them what I paid for mine and maybe they'll drop the price a bit. Looks like it sold

I don't understand why people have hate on the 3rd gens. I think they are very slick looking trucks and I love mine.

Age of a car doesn't bother me, my last car was a 18 year old 99 WRX with 240k on the body and 90k on the engine and I miss it. Notice the 1st gens are running strong at 200 to 300k miles, I almost bought one, but I wanted a long bed double cab. In 3 years I'll have added 18k miles to the truck that will easily last me a decade.

I went through the same predicament starting about a year ago until early October. Initially I was just dead set on getting a used TRD 4x4. I looked all over southern and central California and everything was in the mid 20s to low 30s regardless of if it had 20k or 100k. I looked and looked and even was driving to carmax Fresno to buy a 15 TRD and decided it was weird they wouldn't give me a carfax and sure enough when I paid for the carfax on my own there was frame damage reported.

Anyway, I ended up getting a 17' SR 4x4 and was out the door for around 8k less than a TRD sport. Super happy that I decided to go 3rd gen even though I do have a few minor complaints, mainly being the shifting.

You must not live somewhere that they salt the roads in winter lol. Around here rust eventually claims anything driven during the winter. Fluid film etc. can prolong life but it gets to the point that any work you need to do will consist of 80% of your time getting frozen bolts out 20% actual repair.

Edit: I came from a WRX too, awesome cars!

When I went looking last spring I drove 6 different '17s; offroads, sports, sr5's, long beds, and short beds. They were all ok trucks, but as soon as I got into my '13 I knew it was the right one.
