Should I buy out my 2017 Tacoma or star a new lease with a 2019 or 2020

I love my 2017 Tacoma, and my plan all along has been to buy it out when the lease ends in September. but i'm wondering if the newer technology (lane assist/brake assist) in the 2019 or 2020 will make a big difference in resale value down the road? i know a Tacoma is a Tacoma and will always have great resale value but i feel like that's gonna be a big difference ~10 years from now.

my model is the offroad 2x4 SB, paid 36k, its in excellent condition.

Radar cruise and the safety stuff is nice (PCS). I don't use lane assist. If you can wait for the 2020, then CarPlay and the electric seat would be desirable features IMHO.

It's hard to say without knowledge of your financial situation specific costs/pricing on the trucks. But my two cents is this:

If your plan was to buy out the truck you have now do it. The changes between 2017 and 2019 models isn't that drastic, plus if you do start a new lease whose to say once it's time to buy that one out you aren't having this conversation again about a 2021 truck?

I don’t find any of the new features annoying. In fact, I find them very helpful. Lane departure can be turned of off if desired. I leave them on all the time.

I'd have to go with the consensus here, buy out ur 17 and wait it out would make the most financial sense, i cant say the 2020 isnt a step up with a revolutionary new power seat nd carplay/android auto 2 features I really dont need but think about it this way ur 17 is the last year WITHOUT all the fancy tech which may help resale value in the future.

At this point the only reason to trade in a leased Taco for the newest model, would be for a more fuel efficient engine. But that’s not reality yet. That’s my take anyway.

never think of a vehicle as investing for the future.

all that crap may be worthless if broken.

I don't think it would be worth it for the Safety Sense stuff alone. If you were upgrading to a 4x4 and/or wanted a certain color change this time around then I'd be able to justify it. Or if you go with a 2020.

Either way keep in mind you can extend your current lease by 6 months, same exact payment, if that helps give you more time to figure things out.

Also if you get rid of your current 2017 remember to shop it around for equity don't just give it back to toyota

Thanks for all the input! I should have made it a little more clear, it’s not just for re-sale value, I also was interested to see if the new tech was just overall worth it, especially the cruise control auto set.

All I can say is you are not missing much by not having lane departure monitor.

I turned mine off 50 miles after taking delivery of the truck; that’s how annoying it was. Haven’t felt the need to turn it back on ever since.

I wouldn’t give up a truck you already know and love for that feature.

I wonder what the timeline will be for theses safety system parts to fail?

Staying in your lane is about the easiest thing to do behind the wheel.

I'm really not a fan of things that make it easier to not pay attention.

I love my Cruise Control though, not gonna lie. Really, my leg loves it. When i was young i didn't give two shits unless i was drunk....which goes back to my first statement.

That's about the only time I think lane assist could actually be usefull, while DUI.

Take out a loan and buy out your lease when its over, providing that the re-sale value is greater than the residual lease amount (which it probably will be). Take the difference and pay down on leasing a new one. This if you intend to lease a new 2020..

I don’t think that way. People are inattentive at times. We reach to tune the radio, use cell phones, kids distract us, we get tired. It should be considered an aid not something to be totally relied on. I like all TSS features. My concern is that it is more costly things to fail and raises the price of cars and trucks we buy. Most of this stuff is government regulation.

I'm sure a lot of people said the same thing about all those other new-fangled things that make us soft, like air conditioning, remote door locks and power windows... :crapstorm:

Anyway, OP -- I really like the blind spot monitoring on my other car, but I don't think it's worth it to incure all the financial costs of a new truck just to get it. Stay the course on your current plan and then upgrade to a new truck if/when you really it. Constantly upgrading cars/trucks is a financial pit that just gets deeper and deeper every time.

Those have proven to be reliable over the past 50 yrs. This new tech still remains to be proven. I hope for my wallets sake these features are as bulletproof as the items you named.
