Found one nearby from a private seller. 155K. Seller says it's in good condition but provided no details. I realize this is a crapshoot as I need to pay someone install. Considering it because we've got unexpected house repairs now. Guessing there is no way to tell if it's good or bad. Opinions?

What is the price of buying the used trans & paying a shop to install it versus having the shop rebuild yours?

A rebuild (good one) would be expensive, in many cases. Running in through the gears and turning it by hand can tell a lot. The X factor is that you need to pay for installation, so I guess it depends on the cost of the trans and the labor. I would probably risk it but I would also be doing the labor. How much for the trans?

Thanks for replying. $400 for used transmission. $1400 for rebuild. $800 for installation.Plus the clutch. Hate to be cynical but there's no way to really know if the reported mileage of used transmission is accurate.

If possible I would drain the used transmission oil through a paint strainer and look for metal, no metal, probably OK.
