Bought a certified 17 trd sport 2wd with 18k miles on it for 33k otd. Love it, the scoop, premium entune (non jbl prem), love 17 in wheels. BUT in the back of my head i have the regret of 2wd.
Dealer offers 30 day no questions money back guarantee towards an in stock certified used Toyota.
    I just saw they have a certified 17 4wd SR5 dc with 38k miles.

Only things I’ve done to mine is take the pinstripes and decals off, and changed the headlight bulbs, and put 1k miles on it. It’s been 2 weeks.

    Both clean CARFAX’s.

    Looking for serious opinions.

Is the 20k mile difference that big of a deal?

Did i ruin my return by taking off the decals?

Is this a decision I’ll think about forever?

    EDIT: $600 more for 4wd

Miles don't matter, they are both low.

I'd go talk to them to see if you can work something out. What region are you in? Do you need 4x4?

Get the truck that fits your lifestyle. Do you see yourself using 4wd? If so, then trade it in.

I personally have a 2wd sport and not once have I been in a situation where I needed 4wd. But that’s because my lifestyle and the places I go with my Tacoma doesn’t require it.

I’m a backpacker, but the second i got mine i deep dove into overlanding it and realized i wouldn’t make it far. Guess honestly i know what i want, but don’t know if debadging it hurts the return.

Yeah man get the 4x4 sr5 if you plan on camping and going into national forest or blm land with your truck. The difference in milage between the two trucks is not big deal

im not sure but i dont think the decals are a big deal. You can also buy new decals and apply them

Just looking at your profile pic you need 4wd
Swap it out if you can.
Don’t admit to removing any stickers, just hand them the keys.

Do it. SR5 is fine, if you're gonna mod it anyway, you'd change out just about everything that makes up any of the higher trims.

Return it . Don’t mention anything about you removing the decals or pinstripes. They probably won’t even notice.

Yeah the miles are low for the model year, price is comparable too. Sport trim never made sense to me and a 2wd sport makes even less sense. But I live where it snows and there are mountains so take that into consideration. So if it were me I’d probably try to return/trade. Just make sure they don’t try and pull anything funny on you. Welcome to TW.

If you love the outdoors then get the 4X4. However being here on TW you are already considering spending more money to upgrade already. It's a illness! Wait till you get your 4X4!:spending:

J/K.... make the move and enjoy the new 4X4. And welcome!

    I second boywonder77's post
    do you need 4x4?
do you go offroad? enough to need 4x4? inclement weather?
If you never do any of those things and live in southern California, the 2wd is fine
If you live in a snow heavy area or are hitting hairy off trail, 4x4 will be helpful.
I'm not sure what being a "backpacker" means with regards to the truck. Are you driving to trailheads, or uncharted no road territory?

$600 isn't much more for 4x4, but do the other trim upgrades on your TRD mean more to you?

None of us can answer these questions, only you can

Agree with every one else - decals are not a deal breaker, and the mileage isn't that much different and you will probably run out of years warranty before miles warranty, unless you drive high mileage

One thing that is hard to judge is resale - I'm guessing a 4x4 will capture more later, but have no data to support that assertion

Be honest what kind of “overlanding” you want to do as well. Lots of BLM land and fire roads are fine using a 2wd with weight in the bed and decent tires. Not everyone loves rock crawling. Though sand — sand is a good argument for 4wd.
