Should I downsize from 33x12.50 to 265/70 or 32x11.50?

?

What size tires???

  1. Stay with 33x12.50s

    20.0%
  2. Go back to 265/70s

    20.0%
  3. Buy 32x11.50s

    255/75r17 is a pretty cool tire (46 lbs in a ko2)

    Super narrow compared to 12.5s...

They will probably be a close to an inch narrower than the 265/70r16 tire

Prolly more accurate to call them 32x9.5r17

One option to is see if there is a somebody, near you selling some (32x11.5x15) or has a set that is willing to let you swap them out for an test drive... you might still think they are too much of a power loss also...personal preference is a big component. Based on the concerns about power loss, maybe stay away from steel wheels.

It could be to you have tall re-end ratio like 3.9(?) and you should stay with a stock diameter tire...

Happy to do the calc for you; takes 30 seconds; just need two speeds in 4th gear and tell me what the rpm at each speed when you get a chance (slow & fast; maybe 40 mph & 70mph; just either end of the rpm band; I just need one, but two or three speed and rpm is better; they should all say the same ratio and is better confirmation); have a passenger take down the info:

    Example:
    40mph in 4th gear is 2000 rpm
    70mph in 4th gear is 3500 rpm
If those were from your truck an online calcs say it would be 4.56 rearend, and I would say 33s are totally fine with 4.56s; get some much lighter tires & wheels to get the power back... or if they are 3.9(?), I'd say... dude... say with the 31s (maybe go with 30s), and get other off-road stuffing re-gearing is out of the budget and to invasive (which is fine). But can't know what to say without knowing the ratio ;)

If you're want the most capability rig for tough trails do sliders, bumpers, winch, skids, (protection for when you bottom out and/or hit stuff; everybody does), oversized tires & re-gear with lockers/lsd, in that order. You could skip the big tires, re-gearing and lockers/lsd and still have a very capable rig.... oversized tires, gears & lockers/lsd are the most expensive of those things.

If you just doing muddy roads, deep snow (a lot more than a foot) or sand, where damage from bottoming out isn't a concern, just go with the biggest tires you can stand that have clearance chains (for snow and serious mud) with your existing gearing and maybe a front bumpers & winch, recovery gear

A guy on here bought a Tacoma with 35x12.5x15 KM2s (they are only 4 lbs heavier than yours, but he had aluminum wheels so the combo might weigh the same or a tad less) on a 2.7L with 4.10s on a 5 spd; his main complaint was it never saw 5th gear (it had a 3" body lift and a cheap 3" suspension lift; no trimming or pinch weld mod); wheeled it pretty hard for a while (I think) before doing 4.88s and bunch of other stuff; dude was a fabrication guy on here (relentless something or other).

    Just noticed your post.

Well... this is what the online calcs say (checked 2; both had the same results)... I might do it by hand just confirm, but pretty sure it will say the same thing:

    1900 rpm @ 40mph in 4th = 4.33 rear-end
    2000 rpm @ 40mph in 4th = 4.55 rear-end
    2600 rpm @ 55mph in 4th = 4.31 rear-end
    3100 rpm @ 70 mph in 4th = 4.05 rear-end
    3200 rpm @ 70mph in 4th = 4.16 rear-end

The average is 4.28... if I remember right the gear options for it were 4.10, 4.30, 4.56... so looks like 4.30, & agrees with your door tag... I dunno why there is big range in the results... will think about it, and get back to you.

Most wheelers think 4.56 or 4.88 is ideal for a 2.7L with 5 speed manual transmission for 33s... 4.30 is pretty close to that, just one step down..

So you have the same set up as me... I would like to drive our truck with 4.56s on stock tires; kinda think that ratio would be idea for my preferences maybe (might be tad to low though) but then could use that as a reference...

A lot of 2.7Ls 5-spds with 265/70r16 came with 4.10, and nobody complains

The KO2s @ 56lbs* are middle of the pack weigh-wise for 33x12.5x15s, my duratracs are 48lbs*, most P265/75r16 are around 37lbs*, plus the steels add about 10lbs (~ low 20s Al. & low 30s steel.)... (* claimed weight)

If that's right, your stock tire/wheel (assuming it a street'ish standard tire; not load D or E) should weigh ~ 58 lbs, and the new tire/wheel should weigh about 85lbs to 90lbs:

weight increase for KO2 with steel wheels:
    85/58= 1.465 or 46%
    90/58= 1.551 or 55%
(Prolly best to pull one off, and compare on a scale for your setup; I did mine last night; 58lbs stock & 70lbs for 33x12.5r15 duratrac & aluminum wheel: 70/58= 1.206 or 20.5% increase; a bit less than half the weight penalty; that makes a big difference with a small engine, might be why I think mine are tolerable)

And 31s (p265/70r16) are already considered an oversized tire for a compact truck standard is 29s (P225/75r15)... and we just have the smaller engine to push them... their are guys with up to 42s on 1980s rigs with 2.4L; they have deep gearing, like 5.29s and are just kinda slow rigs; it's all just tradeoffs...

If you decide to go with 32s, I strongly recommend an aluminum wheel and a light'ish tire (maybe lighter than the KO2) best thing to do is see if somebody has that or selling and will let you drive them for an afternoon (offer them a good case of beer or something; well worth it) just drive around town (no wheeling) & steepish grades or freeway onramps to get a good feel for performance differences; then just flex it out with the wheel turned hard on a ramp or big curb so you can see how much contact (rubbing) you have...

What kind of wheeling are you planning to do and doing?

Im beginning to think about putting my stock wheels back on with some 265/75r16s. It should give me some power back and definitely give me some room to flex on trails. Cause i would much rather take function over looks even tho my 33s looks badass. Any opinions? :annoyed:

Here is my stock suspension truck with factory wheels and 265/75r16's. I can't tell that it rubs the wheel well or pinch weld anywhere, but I do get some rub on the frame at full lock. I have a lift kit on order and intend on doing some aftermarket wheels with a bit more back spacing to hopefully stop the rubbing.
