I just got an email from the dealership that I bought my preowned 09 taco from, asking if I want the extended warranty. I had asked about it last week while we were doing the paper work, and never got a response, but it was the last day of the clunker crap. They were all overworked and preoccupied by the new car deals and gov paperwork.

So, would it behoove me to get the extended? The truck is still under the manufacturer's warranty at this point. I can't remember if I had issues with my first new toy truck after the man. warranty period because that was 25 years ago. Damn, I'm old! I need to quit talking about my toyota history! :p

How much longer do you have on the original warrantee?

I'm in the same boat...mine is up in March. I really gotta go back and read my warrantee coverage details because the drivetrain portion is good till 5 years I think.... If that's the case, I might bypass getting an extended warrantee.

If you're considering an extended warrantee, you might be interested in reading this:

well its sound like your a mature(old)lol. driver and your not going to beat the thing to death.not that beating your truck is a bad thing, but it will probally make things go wrong alot quicker for sure.its one of those things that u get in your gut.if u feel u NEED it,then go for it.i myself didnt get the x tended and have had NO problems at all.knock on wood with 75,000 miles.but with that being said 1 major componant fail, and that will b costly.im sure there is lots of people on here that dont have the x tended as well.come on, its a toyota!good luck to ya.

it just turns me on when a lady uses abig college word like(BEHOOVE):p and your'e not grtting old just more enlightened ;) as far as an extended warranty goes , i think that depends on whats left on the factory warranty and how long you were planning on keeping your truck.
i'm no expert but i've been told not buy an extended warranty from one of those outside companies.talk about getting old a word like behoove turns me on ,that's just sad:mad:

I have the extended warranty but i think its a huge waste of money, i forget were i looked up the actual warranty and what it covered because i was curious as to what coverage i had and it was just a longg list of things they didn't cover quote on quote "acts of God" "glass" best of all "shiny metal" god i wish i could remember were i read it i'm pretty sure in the manual had what the warranty covered, it was a few years back, those were the ones that stuck in my head like wtf?

LOL! Ah, come on, Ned! Does it really make you old to be turned on by a linguistically competent woman? You know, we brainy chicks are usually more competent in other ways, too, especially those of us that drive tacos.

    I think I have a warranty book in my gc. I'll check . . .

Personally, the cost vs. what was covered didn't make it worth it. Put your money in the bank and it will cover a large part of any maintenance IF you ever need it.

Here's the web site for the factory discount warranty referred to by Janster above.
    http://fd-warranty.com/index.html
The Platinum Plan is the most comprehensive and covers most components, except for normal wear and tear items. If you go to www.toyota.com, find the link to the finance section, you will find an outline of what all is covered with the Platinum plan, as opposed to the Power Train plan, etc.

Personally, I think it is a good deal at the prices offered by FD-Warranty, if you consider the price of an air conditioning compressor, ECU failure, 4X4 systems, and other parts that make a truck complicated.

I got the platinum 7/100/0 from Troy at Greenfield Mass for $880.
You have until your 3/36 is up to buy it. I bought it with 34k on the odo only because I had a couple of costly failures during the factory warranty (4WD acuator, radiator) both those fixes alone were over $1k. Sooo...yeah I might get burned but if I decide to sell it, its transferrable and potential buyers might like it still has a waranty of some sort. :notsure: For the price, it was not bad & again I waited to see what happened. You don't have to bite until you are close to 3/36 anyway.........

I usually pass an any extended warranty, but I might make an exception with my 09 if Troy can substantially beat the dealer price. Toyota Financial Services lists an 8 year 75K Platinum Plan. Since I drive only 8,000 a year this would be a better option as I need years. My past 2 trucks (Chevy S10 and Ford Ranger) I had for 12 and 11 years respectively. Although the miles are not high at the 5 year mark time starts to take its toll. This is also the first automatic I have owned. Knee operation is ending my manual shifting days. :(

reg boulette - Thank you for posting this link. I emailed Troy with my info so I'll see what he comes back with.

Honestly in todays edgy economic times I wouldnt trust a non factory backed warranty company to be still here when I need them.....

The warranty info listed above is for a Toyota warranty - not third party - in case there is some confusion.

Will Toyota give me a wake up call when the truck is 3 years old like they did when I bought my first truck? Then again, I was the only owner of that first truck for 14 years. I might think about going for it when the man. warranty expires because I should have the truck paid off by then.

    I'll email them and see.

Ex warranty is a wast of money, If this was a Kia forum then I would say yes you need it b/c you sh1t is going to break. If you take care of your taco it will last a long time.

I would agree with that statement if we were talking about all my past owned Toyota's but considering all the TSB's and the issues my 08 has exhibited, no way am I going to risk keeping it past the warranty.

$900 for a 7yr/100K Platinum Toyota Warranty is cheap insurance. As Snip said above. The Toyota Quality of today is not like it was 10 years ago.

Snipe, that sounds awful! So there were a lot of issues with the 08s or just yours?

I heard back from Troy and here is what he said
    My truck is 2wd, not a 4x2, I think.

a 4x2 is the same thing as 2wd. Your truck has 4 wheels with 2 wheels being powered by the engine...hence the term 4x2

    Oh, okay! I thought a 4x2 was a truck that had both 4wd and 2wd modes. :p
