I'm looking for a camper top and I found a red one for $150 but I have a white turck, so should I wait, paint it white, or do a black spray bed liner type finish? I think the black may look stupid but it will be a while before I can get it painted so it will look stupid with a red top

How bad do you need it? If you need it really bad buy it and wait for a white one then sell the red one. A used top is typically cheaper than a almost free top painted. I had quotes to paint a topper on another truck and were pretty high.

If it's made to fit your truck and is in good condition with everything working, I say get it and paint to match. Like Paintdiddy said, plan on $3-400 for a paint job and you'll have a nice looking cap for around $500. That's a good price for a used one in my opinion (I paid more than that for mine when I bought it used off another member here). New, the low end, stripped down caps start at $1,000.
