My wife and I just spent a couple thousand on furniture at one of the major furniture stores in my area - they are in 5 states and probably have 50 or so stores. Big place, not a mom and pop type of store. We bought a dresser, a chest, and an end table.

Prices were clearly marked on each piece of furniture, and since we shopped around, we were comfortable with the money we spent and what we got for the money. I never pay attention to the "sale" prices - since that stuff is always "on sale."

I'm not sure why, but when we got home tonight, I began to wonder if you can/should haggle at a big name furniture store..? I mean, that stuff is expensive and I'm sure there is a huge amount of profit in those prices. I haggle every time I buy a mattress, but I think everyone does. Never even occurred to me to try with furniture, though.

    What is everyone else's experience?

You can haggle anything. I've gotten prices cut in half because a store wanted my money rather than me driving 20 minutes up the road to buy it. My favorite thing to do is to go to store A and say that store B will give me this price so can you match/beat it?

I read somewhere that a consumer should negotiate prices on about every thing....
So I was buying a pair of Nike shoes and asked the salesperson if he was in a position to give me a discount.....he asked the manager and I got 10
percent off ...only 8 dollars, but it bought my lunch.

I don't know how useful it would be on furniture but I pull out my student ID everywhere you'd be surprised how many people/companies will give a discount on stuff when you're a student. The man who sold us my truck knocked off 300 bucks because it was going to be for me and I had my ID on me. Bastard still didn't give me a full tank though.

I guess if you don't ask, you'll never know. You guys saying I should have haggled - you have convinced me. I am thinking I should have asked for a discount if I bought all 3 pieces of furniture...as if I was only going to buy one and if they made it worth my while, I'd buy all 3...damn it all.

I'm usually a good negotiator, but I don't buy furniture all that often, and it just never occurred to me to do so.

Maybe I should call them back tonight and say I changed my mind - stuff doesn't get delivered for a few days from now. See what they say?

If you are comfortable with what you spent then don't worry about it. As long as you are happy with the purchase.

The lady at subway knows 2 things about me.
    1. That I only eat American Cheese and Cheddar Cheese in that order, America first always in everything.
    2. That I will not hesitate to pull out my Student ID on the new workers, they change workers every 2 weeks it seems, to get my 10% discount and if the new person refuses to take I will stand there and argue with them.

No. You made a deal. Live up to it. They shouldn't pay for your mistake.

I see where you are coming from, and I'm totally satisfied with what I paid for what I got. But I have the right to change my mind on any retail purchase for any reason at all, don't I? What you are saying really does not make much sense to me, to be honest. I have not taken delivery of the merchandise yet.

A little of this and a little of that.

What you're experiencing is "buyers remorse". Once you nod, say OK, or shake hands, the deal is done. Live and learn.

I've been all over the world, and the USA is the best place on this rock, but everywhere else haggles over price. Haggle, it can't hurt.

I have a feeling a LOT of people on this forum experience this feeling when they buy stuff for the taco... but then they get it in and are like :headbang:

I should have been more clear. It's fine if you want to return it, but don't return it and then ask for a discount on it.
