Not worth it if 2wd. 4Lo is far more important, as others have said. Don’t waste money. If you want to go 4-wheeling get a 4wd.

I think for many it's not to go out for a wheeling day, it's added insurance to get to dispersed campsites down fire roads. Incase things turn a little wet or sandy.

Best advice in this thread. Shovel, traction boards, being able to pick a smart line and knowing the abilities of your truck is better than a locker.

If you're not out mudding or rock wheeling, you don't need 4WD, or a diff locker .And I say this as someone w/ 4WD and a rear locker haha

More Power Puller come along. Can't praise this enough. Got me out of a few jams. Slow, bit of a pain in the ass compared to a winch, but worth its weight in gold when you're stuck.

That looks pretty good. And it weighs in only around 25 lb.

And, you can use it elsewhere. Front, back , side. Pulling trees if you're into firewood. Costs a bit, but will last you a lifetime, then give it to the kids.

I've wanted low range more often than 4x4..... I've wanted 4x4 more than my locker.

Lessons learned from 7 years of a 1st gen 4x4 with e-locker driving around the western US through remote areas. Not rock crawling.

Truth! I'm blown away with what my truck can do in 2WD. It's all about the driver.

I’m just saying that putting a rear locker in a 2wd is an investment of diminishing returns. Not worth the money and level of modification. And then when you have a hard time after that, what you gonna do convert to 4wd?

From my experience a 4wd with low speed transfer case with no locker will outperform a 2wd with rear locker and no low speed in the transfer case all day. Hands down. It’s the low gearing and drive in the front and back that matters. Yes, 4wd low with no locker still only sends power to two wheels, like a 2wd with locker would, but it’s in all the right places. No comparison.

I’ll add, I have an OR, so I have a locker, and I use it when needed, but 2wd with locker and 4wd without is an apples and oranges comparison.

This guy says he doesn't go out much. Just wants it as a fallback. He's not taking off-road trips often like many people here on Tacoma world or taking trips just to see how far they could push their truck. I don't think they need to trade it in for a four-wheel drive for this usage. Yeah it's going to be in big investment for a locker, I would probably just learn how to use my recovery gear. That's actually what I did

Deflating the tires to 10-15 psi is a lot cheaper than adding lockers and will improve traction instantly or get you unstuck!
