Will I be happy with a 2018 Tacoma? After talking to a Toyota tech who expressed some concerns with the 2017 model, customers complained of the auto tranny and power.
What are opinions of new owners?

Hate to say it... but go drive one. The ONLY person who can answer that is you.

Here you're prone to a LOT of opinions... very strong opinions.

I will say this... I did not like how the 3rd gen auto drove compared to the 2nd gen auto. The consensus on here is clearly the opposite.

I like how my 3rd gen manual drives compared to the 2nd gen auto..

Get an overnight or an extended test drive to see if you like it.

OP - been answered, go drive one. I never even drove the auto, but man this DCSB Sport Manual is a blast to drive and highly recommend it.

If I were in your shoes, I would just keep your truck. Not because of "2nd gen vs 3rd gen" thing. But because it's your truck. You've already got it and assuming it is performing well, just keep running it.

If you feel like you need an interior upgrade its well worth it imo.

2nd gen interior was rough for me...

This is literally the worst forum to ask this specific question.

If you spend enough time on the 3G forum reading posts from specific members you'll think you own the worst vehicle in the history of the world.

There are only two best gens. 1 and 3.

Just like the matrix movies. 1 and 3.

His question is generally bad for any Forum, how can anyone outside of him know what he would be happy with? The suggestion to go test drive one is the best advice we can give to him.

The 3rd gen is different, but flat ground, moderate hills, towing trailer, night and day, my auto TRD 3rd gen is a gem to drive. Way nicer than my 2006.

The mountains, 06 seemed to handle them in a smoother manner less rev. So far 4K since Nov, no complaints really in my new truck. If anything, after being in a taco since 2006, do over? I would have got a Tundra.

My .02 .I just had my 2006 at the dealer for frame replacement. I hab a 2017 sport for loaner for 3 weeks.
Interior and creature comforts were amazing.Engine lacked power, transmission was always upshifting and down shifting.I told my wife if i could have the powertrain frome my 06 in the 2017 i would be happy.
But i will be keeping my 2006.Just my opinion.
