Everyone saying 4x4, but if you don't use it why pay the extra for it? I think its your "weekend warrior" thing, its making people think you're going on trails etc. Anyway, the only reason I would pass is the 4 cylinder. The 6 has great power, I'd try to find that in your budget. Otherwise, its a good price.

You're gonna hear both sides 4 vs 6 cyl.

From someone that's had both... I thought that the 4 cyl double cab was very underpowered on the highway. I hated driving distances on the interstate. If there was any wind at all, it sucked. I bought it new in 2010 and traded in on a 6cyl within 6 months. MPG difference on the highway was negligible.

They were 4x4 so I don't know if that makes any difference.

Toyota dealers don't certify vehicles over 60K? Maybe I'm wrong and it's 80K. Certification includes a one year warranty. I would double check the certified claim.

@harpolith is spot-on regarding 4 cyl vs 6 cyl. I also recommend the 6 cyl.

4cylinder in a single cab seemed reasonable. (I own one). Recently threw bigger tires on, BFG 265/65/16, and its a dog lol.

4 cylinder in a double cab, I don't think I would go for it. Especially if you have a 20k budget you can find a pre runner, if you don't want the 4wd, with a v6. Id opt for that.

Seriously, get the v6 if you want a double cab.

Edit: You should really consider the v6.

Thanks all for the input. I've decided to move on and find a v6. I'm in no hurry, and wouldn't want to regret it.

I just traded my 2014 Off Road 4x4 in for a new 4runner, it had 14,000 miles on it.

I would never buy a 4cyl truck and I would never buy a truck that was not a 4x4.

Its hard when you are set on having no payment, but in my opinion, get a new 2016 SR5 DCV6 for $26,000 and have a small $100 payment, no worries, better mpg's, color you want, get them to throw in oil changes, etc. As countrylvn said, they really make it worth your while to buy new and with how little Tacomas depreciate, buying used doesn't make as much of a difference as other cars.
That being said, if you disagree(which I completely understand) and want no payment, beat the bushes. You can find one like you are talking about with 20 or 30K miles for the same price. It's weird how little mileage affects used Tacomas prices.
My last two tacomas were 4 bangers. In all honesty, it will get the job done, and if you are sure you will NEVER need the power then you will be fine. It will get you where you need to go. But make no mistake, as others have said, the 159 hp V4 is a dog.

I live in southern Louisiana and I find the 4wd very valuable in the highways because of the massive rainstorms and pooling water. Don't think it's only useful for off roading or snow. I would not spend that kind of money on a 4 cylinder either. I would get an older 2nd gen 4x4 TRD for that money. My 2006 TRD Sport had its first repair today, just 200 miles shy of 150,000. And it was a wheel bearing for under $500. Not bad for 10 years. Just a few years ago I was getting letters from dealers offering $17,000 for my truck sight unseen. Tacomas have one of the best resale values of any vehicle out there. Don't buy an underspec'd version. By the way, is there such a thing as a Prerunner with. 4 cylinders? Make sure someone didn't just stick some badges on it.

They made a 4cyl double cab!?:turtleride: 60k is double the mileage that truck should have for the year it is.

Its better to have it if you are going off the road. Besides who likes to put chains on their truck in the snow when going snowboarding. If you don't need 4WD you may want a good winch in its place.

I agree if you are planning to do some offroading, its necessary. We're in CA buddy! We don't have real snow! lol In all honesty I've been making trips to Big Bear since I was an infant, go 1-2 a year. We have needed chains less than 10 times total, so I don't worry about that much.

Went up there 1 time this year and was happy I had 4WD because would have to use the chains. Had a set behind the seat, nice new un-opened set of chains :). Though I probably can buy many sets of chains for what I have to spend to replace parts. Had a Jeep until it rolled on the street when one of my kids was driving it. Now have the 2013 TRD 4x4 and am planning on building it up next year after my wife gets her kitchen island. Did not hesitate to get 4WD because would like the freedom to tour our mountains and get back to some night time target fireworks in the sandy parts of the desert. 4WD in sand is a must.

I'm honestly surprised that Toyota hasn't phased out the 2.7 . Then again history proves they have always put grossly underpowered engines in their trucks. Get the 4.0 or you will hate yourself. I know from personal experience.
