Gonna install an ARB locker in the rear, while I’m ther should I regear? I have a 97 tAcoma 2.7L 4x4 auto single cab on 31 km3’s on a 2” lift, feels good in the city, but when I’m on the hills Im really breaking out the powerband, I have 4.10 gearing atm, will regearing give me more power? Better mpg? Was looking at the 4.56 or 4.88, I habe no experience in gearing, would like some input, thx

Is that the stock gearing, and stock tire size?

If so, no, you won't get more power, or better mpgs.

That lack of power you're feeling is the fact that you have a 4cyl...

Yeah thats the stock gearing, stock tire size on the door says 28” tires, so regearing wouldnt help my hill problem

Which sticker? I got curious and just looked at mine, and it has a sticker that says 235/70r15, which I know for a fact it came with 265/70r16 (it's a v6 trd 4x4).

EDIT: I should also say that same sticker says 265/77r16 as well.

So if they were in fact 28's, then a regear might actually help, but keep in mind you gotta do both diffs, though.

You might try playing around on this website and plugging in your gearing and tire size and stuff and see what it calculates your RPMs should be.

You in WA state? I've been looking for a set of 4.30s to put in my rig, I like running the 31s but I've got 3.56 gears and it's a total slug off the line.

4.30s would be perfect cause it'll make my Odometer actually read correctly

Pretty sure 4.56 only came stock on 2.7l auto 4x4 models. However, I do not know if ALL 2.7 autos had that ratio. Probably depends on stock tire size.

Maybe try turning off overdrive if you can. Won’t be the same as regear but will help with the transmission searching. I used to drive that way in my Jeep it was much better than with overdrive engaged.

Yep and claims 4.10. Did every 2.7 auto come with 4.56? Probably not, if I had to guess.

I thought the 4.56 was for manual? I know many 2.7L auto came with 4.30 (PreRunner?) as well

I can confirm at least one auto 4x4 2.7 came with 4.56. No manual came with 4.56 irrc.

Dalandser is right auto trans has higher gears than mt hence the 4.56.

my mt 2.7 has 3.91’s.... :( but I just sourced some stock 4.56 and the only models that came with these were 4cyl auto

My stock 2.7 MT only has 3.56 :( it's the worst off the line ... completely useless

I cruise 60 on the highway at only 2100-2200 rpm at least:rofl:

    4 run, 2 don't
As others mentioned, its your 4 cylinder.

Better mpg? Its a 4 cylinder...and you've got a lot of stuff your carrying, so throw mileage concern out the window unless your truck has a legitimate issue or lack of maintenance IE plugs, fuel filter, air filter, etc.

Gearing to something like 4.56 or higher will only result in even worse mpgs, but you'll feel the power come on sooner at lower speeds.

Let's not forget, you'll need to match the front...may as we put a locker up front while you're in there.
