I have a 2019 TRD Pro with a 3 1/2 lift and 285/75 R16 tires. I carry alot if extra weight due to the front and rear bumbers, winch, skids, rock sliders etc. I have it tuned by RC tuning florida, put a dual exhaust on it, and a snorkel. Add recovery gear and an extra person and it all adds up.

My gas milage is horrible, like 12 MPG especially down the freeway at 75 plus.

Thinking of regearing to 5:29 gears. Will that help get better milage? I'm OK with the performance.

Have you read through the re-gear megathreads? I believe there’s one for 4.88’s and one for 5.29’s.

I’m not regeared so I can’t really offer much advice.

I can’t imagine not regearing on 285/75. I would go straight to 5.29.

Thanks guys! Trying to weigh out the cost benefit milage wise. It's about $1400 give or take to regear to maybe get a couple extra MPG's. That's allot of tanks of gas before you recoup the costs of the regear. Of course if you factor in the additional performance it may be worth it. Trying to convince the GF the cost is worth it....well, that's a different story...lol

Pretty much have to do it for the performance benefit and then hope there is an mpg improvement. There probably will be an improvement but it’s impossible to know for sure if there will be one or if it’ll be enough to make any difference in a reasonable amount of
    Time.

But, I can certainly understand spinning the potential benefits to help approve the purchase.

And yeah as pointed out after me, $1400 seems quite low. It was about $3k for me.

Where in the world are you getting $1400 for a re-gear? It cost me $3k 3 years ago before inflation spiked. My guess is you'll be closer to $3.5-4k. You're never going to recoup this money via increased MPG.

With that said, re-gearing to 5.29s is the best thing I've done for my truck. MPGs around town were slightly improved, but highway MPG took a small hit. If you plan to keep the truck for a very long time you should go for it.

Maybe he's referencing the 5.29 rebuild kit? That comes in at a little over $1400.

    https://www.stage3motorsports.com/g...-nitro-gear-axle-gear-package-5.29-ratio.html

edit: here's a late April install at ECGS another member had done that came in at about $3200. That's not as bad as I had imagined.

Looking back at my receipts it was about $2750 3 years ago. The biggest change was shop labor going from $135 to $175.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Higher gear ratio translates into more engine revs per mile. More revs = more fuel consumed. Is it significant? I don't know.
More weight (mods, cargo, etc.) = higher fuel consumption.
Can't expect great MPGs if you've added a bunch of "bells & whistles" to your Taco.
I'm totally happy with my stock TRD OR. It's not as 'peppy' as my '06 TRD OR was, but it IS better on MPGs.

Be careful about the mechanic that does that work. 'Close' will work for a little while.

Yeah the most recent quote I received from a reputable off-road shop for a regear was between $3K-$4K depending on whether or not I had them add a rear locker.

I would be very suspicious of anyone doing it for $1400.

it was around 1200 per axle for regear around me. That was the best price. i got up to 2k per axle from shops that didnt want to do the work. i wouldnt worry about the GF if she doesnt approve get another

I was looking at the kits for about $1400 not the total costs. Anyways thanks for all the info. Doesnt sound like it would improve the MPGs enough to make it worth it. I do carry allot of extra weight with all the " bells and whistles" added on. Add some recovery gear and another person and it all adds up to at least a few hundred pounds. I got a tune by RC Tuning Florida and it made a huge difference. It is pretty peppy so its not about the performance for me really. I hadded exhaust and a snorkel on it too so, I'm probably getting as much HP out of it that can be gotten without supercharging it. But it drinks gas especially on the freeway. Was hoping to improve that. Again thanks everyone for the info

Get a scan gauge to monitor fuel and you'll find that slowing down will make a big difference.

Max limit anywhere in FL is 70 anyway.
