Should I replace the tires before I sell my 2014 DCLB Sport, or build new ones into the price?

I have a 2014 DCLB Sport with 50k miles (MGM color) and am looking at 2016 models. The tires still have another 5k but I am looking for advice. Should I replace the tires (thinking Michelin LTX M/S2) or let the buyer pick tires and build it into the price? The truck also has minor rash on the front bumper cover -would this matter to most buyers? Really asking is - do buyers want to do work the way they want, or want something that looks pretty and new? Thanks for the advice. Also - any idea what this truck is legitimately worth? It has the factory tow package and the Sport package with 4wd and Weathertech mats. NC car until this year (in VA).

It's a mixed bag - although hanging out on this form you would think everyone ones wants to go out and mod the crap out of their rig, that is not the case. To get the most interest in your vehicle you must placate the masses. I would recommend getting new tires on the truck.

.02 its a 2014 so I think most would expect a turn key purchase.

If I was a buyer I would prefer the discount on the price and get to choose my own tires. {/$.02]

Maybe you can find some good used tires you could throw on it.

I would not put new tires on it - You're gonna spend just a lot of money on something you are selling off. Seems counter intuitive?

You could put in the listing "new tires", but most people will still beat you up and ignore that fact.

Are you selling it private party or trading it in? Certainly on a trade it you wont get 100% ROI on your money for tires especially if you still have life in yours. What will sell a vehicle as well as gets top dollar.... Get it detailed or just do a real bang up job in getting it clean. I have ran into more people that measure the value of a vehicle by how it looks and not by how many miles are on it, or for that matter give wear items as much consideration like myself. You getting the rash buffed out or minimized would add more ROI.

And on another note, my bed is used a lot (no jokes please) and has a lot of scars and scratches. Is there a good product that can cover them up?

I'd keep the old tires on there and then when you're haggling with a buyer, knock off however much $$$ a new set of tires would cost them. Or keep the price the same and tell them you'll throw in a new set of tires on top of it.

4 LTX MS2 or the new replacement Defender are probably going to run at least $800. So the choice is will an additional $800 for new tires added to the asking price enhance the sale ability of the truck or will a price $800 less with serviceable tires make it a more attractive deal. Myself I would go for the lesser price and buy the tire I want a little later. In my case it would be the Michelin LTX MS2 or the newer Defender. They are great tires.

Another option might be to check around CL or on the classifieds here and see if you can find some OEM take-offs (265/65/17 or 265/70/17 from an FJ or 4Runner) that would be significantly cheaper than the Michelins and would allow you to say it had new tires. Might cost you $300-400 instead of $800-1000. Just a thought.

You can put a bed mat in it.

When I bought my '11, it annoyed me that it had new tires. Only because the dealer obviously put the cheapest things they could find on it. I couldn't justify replacing them because they were new but I hated them.

If you get new tires, I'd go with something like a Dynapro ATM. Very highly rated and one of the least expensive ones.

Throwing BFGs or Michelins on it to sell it would be insane given what they would cost you, but putting on cheap no-name tires could almost be a negative. The Dynapros are a good compromise there.

I would do neither. If you put new tires on it, you wontbget all your $ back out of them. If you lower your asking price, the person will still fight to get it lower. So ask what you would if it had new tires, and then you can lower it a bit in a negotiation. Buyer will be happy because "they won" you will save $.
If trading itnin definatly no new tires. They won't give you any extra.

Are you going private party or trade in? If trade in don't but you might need to in private party. But honestly I would try not to. You are already going to take a large hit being a '14 with 50k miles.

I would not invest in new tires if you're selling it. I don't think you'd get your money out of the sale. I'd negotiate the asking price with the buyer if he/she brings up the condition of the tires. The buyer will most likely try to negotiate the price anyways. Why take two hits?

    Wouldn't buy new ones.

You could spend $800 on new tires and might see $300 back out of it from a buyer, if that. Tires are fairly personal, also, so you may spend your cash on tires only to have those particular tires be a drawback to a potential buyer who wants something different, and will have to replace the tires anyway - still on their own dime, and would sell your new set to help pay for them.

Personally, new tires on a used vehicle wouldn't make it worth any more money to me as a buyer.

Getting back what you paid in tires is unrealistic, and best avoided.

    Good luck with the sale.

I wouldn't spend any additional money on a vehicle you are selling. You won't get out of it what you put into it. Dump that truck and be on your way.

I agree with everyone on the tires thing - don't waste your time/money. As for the bumper rash, yeah if I was a prospective buyer I might knock some cash off my offer if I wanted to eventually get it fixed, depending on how severe it was. And small things like floor mats are going to add virtually no value to an offer I'd make. Same goes for anything like a bed mat or whatever else.

I can't comment on price as I don't keep up with Tacoma resale value. But it works highly in your favor it is a 4x4 with tow package. Only thing I'd do if I was you is the obvious, go vacuum the interior and seats real good and clean out all the rest of the interior, and give it a good wash, including the undercarriage and your on your way to securing a better offer from buyers.

Agree with most on this one. Putting new tires will not fetch you what you invested in them and possibly deter some people if they don't care for your choice of tire selection. Just accept that the worn tires may be an avenue they work you down on.

I'd rather negotiate the price down a little because of warn tires then be negotiated down just so the buyer feels like they have won.

If I am looking at a 2014 Tacoma with 50k miles, worn out tires and bumper rash I am not buying it. Plain and simple. I think your pool of prospective buyers will dwindle without putting new tires on it and not doing something with the bumper and bed. That is too much to overcome for a truck that new. Unless you only want $15k for it.
