Why would you run 10w30? Do you know something the engineers who designed the engine don't?

Wasn't there a thread here where 10W-30 blew up an engine? Maybe it was 30W-10?

I didn't notice a huge drop like that in my tacoma running 5w-30, maybe down a 1 mpg or so, but its winter, I never get great fuel economy at that time of year anyways.

The root cause was his dad changed the oil in that engine.

Convince my 3.5 of that in -15 temps. When the engine groans as it did firing up on a viscosity more than 0w20 it's telling me it's not happy....we had some cold days in past winters, and it never groaned like this before with 0w20. I'm pretty convinced why Toyota recommends 0w20, at least here in New England.

Not sure why the Amsoil hate but only noted it while reading thread. I just did my truck at 1,000 miles with 0-20 Amsoil and also the rear differential.
I have used Amsoil in all my Harley’s all my life and never a concern. Used it in a few 500 BHP Corvettes. Always worked just fine.

Use what you like. Oil choices are like caliber choices on the gun forums.

It is -15 degrees...I am not convinced that any oil will make your engine not groan in those temps. Even toyota themselves in the other countries owner's manuals say 0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30 are acceptable down to any temp. It is only 10W or more where they limit the lowest temperature you should run that at.

For the record, with the logic of this post, any 0W oil whether it be 0W-20, 0W-30, or 0W-40 would fix your problem. If you look at the stats of 0W-40, it's actually thicker at both 100 and 210 Degrees than 10W-30 is. All these viscosities are MUCH closer than people understand.

Bottom line, I highly doubt 5W-30 is the cause of your groan....-15 degrees is.

That's because the oil doesn't stay in a Harley long enough to show any adverse effects.

^I have run twin cam 96, twin cam 103 and now on the M8 114. Guess I just got the special ones that don’t drip or burn oil.

How to derail a thread, lol.

I don't get the attraction with deviating from manufacturers specific recommendations of oil. Is it the cost? or chasing better performance? What is so wrong with 0w20? I've been using that for near 3 years and have sent spent oil to Blackstone for evaluation with absolute positive test results.

I change every 6 months which is always below 5000 miles. Yeah yeah, I know I'm wasting money but to me it's a small cost as vehicle maintenance goes.

Mobil 1 0w-20, I get it on sale at costco. if costco doesn't have it then you don't need it.

Perhaps not familiar with the other purpose of the engine oil - function as a hydrolic fluid for VVT
