The gen 3 is an outstanding & robust truck however it’s the same frame & basic cab shell as your truck so no add’l room. Aside from rear facing car seats, for kids it’s a fine size, plus it still fits in tight parking & your garage.

I’ve driven 1GR & 2GRFKS & both are solid, smooth, and reliable choices, and if you get a manual, people’s complaints about the auto shift logic are 100% irrelevant.

4Runners are assembled to a higher standard than nearly any other Toyota and have the upgraded 1GR under the hood, but….they’re not pickup trucks. Apple & oranges here, trucks and SUV’s are designed for different uses, so you decide first which fits best, as both are heroic.

Take a long ride in a gen 3 and just see if you like it. Otherwise, if you decide you want something really new, hang tight for a couple years and let them work out any bugs on the gen 4.
