I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma with 103000 miles on it. I replaced the alternator recently as it went out. I need to replace a warped rotor before I sell it. I live in Utah and i typically take my dog somewhere on weekends so it needs to have 4 doors. Right now I cant justify having a truck with 2 inch lift and 33 inch tires. I seriously off road only about 2 maybe 3 times a year. Even then I figure I can just rent a utv. I'd like to have the same reliability with room for my dog. So I've considered the Lexus is/gs 350, Subaru outback 3.6 or forester xt, dodge charger, honda civic si manual, honda accord v6 manual, and maybe a wrx but insurance might be too much. If you have experience or recommendations with those let me know. Thanks. 20k to 30k budget.

I just recently got rid of my taco for a 4runner. I needed a vehicle I could transport 2 dog crates in and a child and the 4runner worked. I may look into that if I were you.

I’m the type who after about 8-10 years I get bored and just need a change. I put very few miles on my vehicles so they don’t get worn out in that timeframe. After I sold my Tacoma I got a Forester xt as it seemed like a fun yet reliable car. At the same time my wife’s car is getting up there in miles so I figured why not have a car she might drive even if it’s in a pinch. She would never have touched the Tacoma. Forester has been a lot of fun to drive and it’s pretty dang quick especially for a 2 liter. If you go that route 17&18 are good years to look at.

The Lexus will be more expensive and get worse gas mileage. May as well keep what you’ve got. 4Runner will be equal to your truck more or less.

Outback is great for road trips. Forester is great for taller dogs and better approach/departure angles.

Civic hatch would be a huge departure from the space you currently have.

I would go for a Subaru for the balance between on road manners and economy and some all wheel drive chops and ground clearance still.

Long shot but only if you need even more space than the Outback/Forester then the Pilot/Passport are the kings of interior space.

TL;DR: Outback unless dogs are tall then Forester.

All of that said, cheapest option is to keep the barely broken in Toyota you have.

Keep it and bump it down to a 1” lift and 32s.

    Unknown lift, 31's
I wanted an Outback before getting my 08’ Taco. Only reason I went with a truck was because we still use a truck as a truck a few times a month.

My wife has a Crosstrek though.

The benefit of an Outback or Forester is great MPG and can still go a greater majority of places most people would deem as light-wheeling. Throw on some decent all terrains or even a 2” lift for the Subie and you and your dog can go lots of places.

Get a camper shell for the dog, and take off the lift and big tires. the tacoma with 100k will more than likely outlast a brand new dodge charger by a wide margin.

Owe anything on the truck? If you own it and its paid for then just take the lift off, get a canopy and drive it.

I bought the 15 brand new off the lot, im never doing that again. Its gotta go at least 500k

Hmmmm...... lets see NO. Theyre great trucks and you shouldnt spend more money so ur dog has a luxurious cargo area to sit in. Take the tires off and put a set of at tires on it. There is a reason why our trucks have a high resale value. If you're looking for fuel mileage the Subaru will be about the best for that but subs are for hobos. An alternator and a rotor is minimal for repairs.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking I'll most likely keep it. I bought it for 16k with 87k miles on it last March. I now owe 13,200 and it has 102k miles on it.
It is the Trd off road trim so it has the locker. It has a hard tonneau cover that came with it when I bought it. That covers the bed. I think with the 4.0 v6 and auto transmission I have 3.73 gearing correct?
This truck with 33 inch tires doesn't feel too strong. Would it help if I buy 31 inch tires, effectively changing my gear ratio back to almost stock?
    Thanks.

    Good decision.

Drop it down a inch and go to a smaller tire!!

Plus a cap like others have suggested.

    That's my vote! !!!! :D

Isn't that just a Landcruiser with a Lexus badge? I just looked at stock images, literally don't see a difference off the crack. What am I missing?

This. We just got my wife a new RAV4 adventure. Thing is awesome, obviously it’s not a Tacoma but 30MPG and the new ones look pretty cool too.

You should never sell the Tacoma. Lived a crazy life and the only regret I have is selling the 99’ I had growing up.
