Is there a reason for not choosing a van? Much better for making the most of the space you have.

Yes. We have traveled in a Van the last 2 years. It was great but after 2 years we wanted more comfort, more space, more reliability, etc. It is all possible to find this in a Van but to find one with a 4x4, Airco, separate bed and couch, inside hot shower, reliable, etc is hard and prices are steep. With a truck camper we still have the 4x4 capability, we are higher from the ground (more security), we have more options to choose from regarding car/engine and it can have all this comfort for about 30K (or less).
Specially if you make a flatbed out if it the storage space is huge. In the last 2 years we have seen lots of setups and our conclusion so far is that a truck camper is the best combination to get value for your money.

This all being said...I still miss my Van every day. The community around the VW is huge and great. But since we are planning to keep going for another few years we wanted the options I mentioned above. Other reason why we sold the Van is that we got offered huge amounts of money for this Van (just 4 left in the world with this roof). For that money we could buy a Truck Camper combo and have money left for another year of traveling. We had a VW Vanagon Syncro with a TDI engine. More info on the Van you can see here:

Sweet syncro. Enjoy your travels and good luck finding a replacement vehicle.

The wife and I hope to get back down to Chile in the next couple of years. We really enjoyed our time in Valparaiso and would like to spend more time there before heading into the Andes.

I have one. Buy a Tundra. No way I would put a camper in the back of a Tacoma. Not even sure about the Tundra. Best bet would be a 3/4 or 1 ton.

For sure, full size is best. Four wheel campers are a good bet if you want to stay with a Tacoma or flip pac style, something light weight

    Completely agree.

Thanks! Yes Valparaiso is nice. Was there yesterday ;-).

Thanks! We both work online. We make online education materials for a company in the Netherlands. Mostly focussed on doctors. before this I was director of a consultancy company. But we sold everything in the Netherlands. House and all our possessions (we have 60lbs on stuff left). next to that we saved for 2 years every penny we could. Before this I worked about 100-120 hours a week. Now I work about 40-60 hours a month. Because we do a lot of free camping our costs of living a very low. Our expenses are about 2K a month and with that we can live comfortably here.

    Thanks!

Will definitely do that. If you want to follow our trip also take a look at (same for Instagram).

Thanks! We are 1 year behind in movies (have over 2.000 clips waited to be edited but we simply don't have the time for it hahaha. So check our Facebook page for more regular updates.

That looks like a nice setup! We don't want to go for a poptop since we would like to use the camper in urban areas as well.

    Thanks for the tip!

I have pushed my taco into some "heavier service" than I originally intended. I added a trans cooler, heaver load tires, and a scan gauge to keep an eye on things. I'm not technically "over loaded" but I will say that things get a little wonky when loaded. The problem with taco is it is too damn light to save your ass if something goes wrong. Wind blows you, trailers push you, and wet roads are not cool for stopping. I have gotten away with it just fine and the truck shows no weakness. I change fluids religiously and power is never the issue. I will say that I am closely watching the Nissan Titan XD project. They aren't taking off as they hoped and the big three fan boys love to run their mouths off. I have yet to see a cummins that anyone "hates". They had a few turbo issues but they are over that. The magic is the resale is terrible allowing one to swipe one on the cheap. Remember, the fanboys hate the tundra too, but it is more solid than any big three truck my pops ever owned.
