Should I sell, or let the boy drive my truck?

I'm heading out of the country for six months later this fall. My son wants to sell his Audi because he's tired of $700/mo going out for payment and insurance.

If I let him drive my truck, he'll cover the insurance, and it will be getting loved and driven daily. My other two options are to park my truck at my dad's place where it will mostly just sit. Or, I could sell my truck for what I paid.

After the trade-in on my 2003 Tacoma, I paid a little under $31K for my 2017 Barcelona Red TRDOR, DCLB, no tech package. I think MSRP was around $36K.

Mods - 255/85R16 tired, OVTune 1.05, upgraded speakers, bed mat, floor mats
Needs - new windshield, front bumper cover, and some PDR for a couple hail dings and a fender rub

I guess the real question is "Does anyone think that prices are going to come back down?" With all the money printing, it looks like inflation is a real thing again, and while the chip shortage will eventually ease, I'm not sure if the prices are going to come back down.

Additionally, I like my 2017 because all the safety sense crap got added as standard equipment in 2018.

If you trust your son, I’d keep the truck.

You're right .2017 last year before all those nanny tech are standard in all trims . For that alone, would be a great idea to keep it unless you want to move to another vehicle. Just let your son know it doesn't drive like an audi . He might be mashing the pedal to get it going. Good thing with that though is when you take it back, it already has learned his driving habits and therefore will drive a lot better when you take over until it relearn again your driving habits back or has ovtune 1.05 removed the learning

How old is he? I guess either way, I’m a softie, I’d let my son drive (abuse) it and then tell him he’s paying top dollar to me so he learns about bills and life, and then end up giving it to him for free when I get back. Bad parenting I know, but it is what it is.

Sell it to your son for whatever you want for it (one dollar or $17,000). Title it to him so you're not a party to any liability or damages to it that happens while he's got it. Let him sell his Audi.
I wouldn't bet on the future economy/shortages either way. If the economy/supply has gone South when you get home, buy a beater until better times.

    Like, so many.
I’d definitely let my son drive it. I might ask him to fix the windshield.

Let the son drive it. Sooner or later he'll be paying more for audi maintenance than his payments lmao

    grandpamoses has the answer.

If you remain the owner of the truck, then you remain legally responsible for the truck. This includes violations, accidents, anything.

The kid can sell his car to generate the $$ to buy your truck.

You don't mention how old your son is but I doubt a 16 year old can swing a $700/month car payment so I'm going to assume he's over 21. I'd let him drive it while you're gone, I wouldn't have given it a second thought actually. There's nothing worse for a car (or a truck) then sitting un-used for long-periods of time.

I let my 17 year old son drive my new to me truck for weeks after I brought it home. Kids will be kids but I raised mine right (at least by my standards) and didn't have second thoughts. No new scratches or damage and every time I got in it the tank was full. Months later he told me he was careful because he didn't want to let me down. Don't know what I did to deserve such a good son, but I wouldn't change a thing.

If you let your son drive it while you are gone at least let your insurance company know that he’s going to be the main user of the truck. I bet they’ll raise your rates. Better that than them denying a claim later.
