Should I sell, or let the boy drive my truck?

My oldest kid no way would I let him drive my truck. My youngest it wouldn't be a problem. I guess all I'm saying is it depends on the kid and what kind of condition you want it back in providing you want it back.

Hey!! Thank you everyone for your thoughts.

I hadn't intended this to come across as a question about parenting, but more about whether prices were likely to come back down.

My son will turn 22 in a month. He bought the Audi S5 because he likes sports cars and was hoping to keep trading up until he can afford that McClaren.

USAA already has said that if it's going to be driven more than 1200 miles a year by someone else, it needs to be on their insurance policy. I will have to check about the liability etc with the owner and the insured being different, but that's the purpose of insurance.

Good point about putting a blanket down in the back seat before having sex. ;-)

The chip shortage is expected to run well into 2022. The inflation is a result of a recovering economy and what I've read about it
is expected to be short lived and not extreme. However, the prices we see/pay today will not go down when inflation levels off.

    Has it ever ?

If you trust your son ( I trust mine ) I'd let him dump the Audi and learn to enjoy the truck. My kid is plotting an early demise as
he knows he's gonna be driving my truck...

Insurance won't go up that much. When I bought my 2021 it didn't increase at all. Last month it dropped $40 a month.

Does not sound like you need the money, I'd say the boy gets it.

I'd say some of A, some of B. Definitely keep it, but make him pay a (nominal) amount for it.

    ...

As for parenting advice? I like to know what other people think. Always helps to have more than one perspective. Doesn't mean you blindly follow it, of course.

I'm sure you love your son, but...
A $700/mo Audi is not the best qualifier for good decision making.

I love how most of the comments just pointed toward parenting advice.

Main question is if you want to ensure you have a Tacoma to come back to (due to shortages and likely not just being able to quickly jump into another one), I’d keep it if that is the case. I also have a 2017 and I’d rather keep it with it’s 85k miles than get into a newer model.

The other question about rather to have it sit or be driven…. I’d rather my truck be driven and maintained, even though 6 months isn’t long, I would personally rather not having it sit.

Seems like a win/win for your son to ditch his payment and keep your truck on the road while he can maybe sack some cash for a down payment on something more economical when yo are ready for the truck back.

Very true. My parents taught me morals and character, but the one thing they didn't teach me was financial responsibility. I wish I would have gotten that as well, but neither of them were good with money.

If you are comfortable with your son driving your truck, go for it. You could even do something very cool for your son while he is using your truck. Currently he is paying $700 a month for his Audi, you could tell him to pay you $150 a month for your truck. Toss that money into a bank account and give it back to him at the end of his term with the truck. It could help him on his journey to that McLaren. It would also provide a fund to fix any issues that arise while he is driving it. Hope you find the right decision!

The $700 payment on the Audi is insurance and loan. He makes $50K/yr doing IT application support. But, where we live that's not enough to pay for a one bedroom apartment while still paying on the Audi. Several of his friends were gung ho to get a place until it came time to sack up, pay money, and move out of their parents' houses. So, he's looking to ditch the Audi so he can afford his own apartment.

I keep telling him that if he'd buckle down for six months of hard study and get his AWS certs, he could double or triple his income, but I can't do the learning for him.

A couple comments have raised issues I hadn't thought about, and that was the primary reason for starting this thread.

I was already inclined to keep my truck, but with the crazy money being offered for anything running, it's tempting until I think about being unable to easily replace it next year.

The word on the street is, its going to get worse for the next few months since manufacturers are storing most of the available inventory for the holiday season. So if you're going to sell, do it late October-November.
