Parts that are used on a regular basis stay lubed and fresh. Seals can start to dry and crack from sitting. An example would be Toyota recommends using the 4wd on a monthly basis to keep everything functioning correctly.

An old mechanic told me that just as long as it reaches peak temp, then once a month will be enough to maintain the seals.
i dont know if that is 100% accurate or not.

I use to be about the same, like you as far as wanting to clean or wax. After something like 50 years, my 05 Tacoma sits out in the weather in which is my second vehicle and drive it maybe a total of 3,000 miles a year. I installed a Fumoto valve and every fall, once a year change my filter & oil with Walmart synthetic 5-30w. You might want to consider flushing the brake fluid every 4 to 5 years, moisture is a killer of the brake system. It's a material thing and can be replaced. Just watch out for the crazy drivers on the road! Save your money for other things in life whether it's for repairs or women. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuXlssG4lZU

Pile them in! Bring some ladies along too! When your truck is a pile of rust many years later in your back yard, you'll remember the shore and the truck that got you there!

It's going to last. My 2011 has over 80,000 miles on it and I don't pamper it. I cannot remember the last time I waxed it... I should probably wax it.

To answer the question about starting up the truck weekly:
In the military (if your at a command with tactical vehicles) we hangout in the motor pool once a week going through a checklist (inspection) of the basics - Fluids, tool kits, overall condition of the vehicles, etc. We put at least 20 miles on the trucks a month (Roughly 5 miles a week). We have trucks in our fleet from the 90's with only a couple thousand miles that still purr like kittens and function flawlessly.

Is it necessary? I really don't know but the vehicles are in great condition. So, it doesn't hurt. When I deploy I have my wife start my Tacoma weekly and run it for 5 - 10 min. She drives it at a minimum twice a month. Basically, I follow closely to the military preventive maintenance schedule for my personal vehicles.

Parts are going to be available for a LOOOOONG time for these things. They are by far the best selling truck in this segment, and sell pretty well in general. There will be a parts market for the 2nd gen for decades. Then the junk yards will be full of them after that. So you have nothing to worry about finding parts. It isn't like were talking about Frontiers here.

awesome info. If the military is doing it, im pretty confident it works. Especially after all those years with them still working.

can i drop my truck off for monthly wash and waxes? haha

drive as much or as little as you choose, just drive long enough to get to operating temperature so the thermostat opens up and the coolant cycles through everything so there is no build up.

an ozone generator can be tossed inside the truck to keep it fresh and mildew/mold free.
