hello all! im curious what ya'll think on this. i have an 05 taco with about 270k miles on it. would it be worth it to supercharge the truck? i still want it to be reliable but want the power.

    From a reliability stand point.

The engine has 270k. I’m betting it starting to get tired.
If you install a S/C on it, are you “really” going to be easy on it?
Uhhh, Probably not. Other wise, you wouldn’t install the S/C.

Beating on an engine with 270k isn’t listed under my definition of “how to maintain reliability”

It would be fun to see “what happens”
I had a buddy with a Civic hatchback spraying Nitrous.
Walked all over my 2001 Ford Lightning (S/C 5.4)

The engine didn’t give up. The transmission did.... not what I thought would go first. Blew a hole in the trans on a 2-3 shift. Never seen that before?

Understandable. i know this truck was very well maintained by the last owners they had all the service records from toyota. Also had all the recall fixes done to it and whatnot. i guess i could buy a beater taco and do it on that and see the outcome.

Supercharging any new engine puts more strain on the components. Putting a supercharger on an engine with 270,000 miles is not a good idea, as the strain will take its toll very quickly.

You'd probably save money in the long run and have a more reliable truck by selling the one you have and getting a V6.

Well i threw the blower on at 267k and at 272k it was time for a head gasket. So i decided to replace the motor with a lower miles used one with 110k. Now at 278k the truck decided it was time for another head gasket lol. Just got the new one installed on saturday with ARP head studs. I think the factory head bolts aren’t up to the task of holding the extra cylinder pressures. Other than that this little motor is very responsive to boost and easy to work on too. If i was doing it over again id add ARP head studs before ever running it with the blower

So IYO if i were to get new studs and a head gasket id be alright? how has it been with reliability otherwise? did it kill gas milage? and how practical is it in the long run? also what made you swap the engine for a low mileage one? i mean if your at about the same miles now as you were on the last engine will you do another swap? or just see how long it lasts

The original engine had 272k when the first gasket blew so i decided a newer motor would be good since it burned some oil between changes too. I only put 6k on the replacement motor before the gasket blew again, so since it only has 116k, im gonna run this motor for a while.

If yours doesnt burn much oil and youre gonna throw a new head gasket and studs on it, i dont see any issue adding a blower.

Gas mileage was about 16 when naturally aspirated and its about 14 now. Its been good for reliability so far but i honestly dont expect the rotrex blower to last in the long term. I carry around the stock intake and a stock length belt for the day that the shaft on the blower snaps off lol. Ive got about 10k miles on the blower now, and it seems to be holding up well, but who knows how long that will hang on for. My plan is to go turbo when this thing gives up the ghost if its out of warranty.
