I would like to have a 4R, but need a truck. The 4R is better quality, I would say keep it and mod it out.

    Like, so many.
I’d have trouble not having a truck bed. I just use it too much. I can’t remember how I got by without one.

Ya. 4Runner has a bit more, but not much. I don’t personally think either is comfortable for an adult.

I think this comes down to whether you really want/need a truck bed or not. Some will say that a 4runner with the backseat folded down has as much cargo carrying capacity as the Tacoma, but if you're hauling messy/dirty stuff (soil/mulch, outdoors gear that's muddy, dogs, etc.), do you want that getting all over the interior of your SUV? I was weighing either a truck or a Subaru outback, and the ability to keep messy stuff physically separated from the cabin was what made me decide to go the truck route.

That said, my parents have owned 4runners since the late 90s and I've thought heavily about getting one multiple times in my life. I'm not as big on the current gen as former generations but it's still a tank of a vehicle that will last you a long time and get you a lot of places.

I say yes. I hardly haul or use the bed. I got the Tacoma because it's a great four door vehicle that can off road and has a manual transmission. The bed is just a bonus if I ever use it

I would go for the TRD Off Road Tacoma. You say you don't tinker and add things now, but once you start going off road that might change. Or get the TRD Pro, they're both great.

And if you enjoy a manual transmission, then get a manual Tacoma. Way better and more enjoyable than the A/T one in my opinion

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
4runner no question. If Toyota hadn’t of dropped the ball so much on this drivetrain, then it would have been a harder debate.
It’s not just the motor and trans, my driving experience is just straight up better in my runner. Do I love my taco, hell yes, would I have it over a runner after reading your OP. No

@Jdhermit have you given a used Landcruiser a test ride. If not you should. Go drive an ‘08-whatever you can afford/makes sense.
Sounds whack? Could be just what you are after.

^^ exactly this. I went from a 2018 Tacoma to a 2018 4Runner and the 4runner is superior in EVERY WAY, aside from the lack of a bed. And I'd been driving Tacoma's for 20 years previously. I'm on my first 4runner. I wrecked my 2014 Tacoma, got a 2018 Tacoma, and hated it.

So I got a 2018 T4R. It's quieter, more comfortable, the transmission is better, low end torque is better, it doesn't hunt for gears, fit and finish of materials seems better, the list is endless.

If you can get by without a bed, hands down the 4runner is a better vehicle. I hated my 2018 Tacoma. Love the 4runner.

The 6cyl Atkinson Tacoma felt like driving a 4 banger on the highway.

After having owned both, I also can't even believe these vehicles are priced similarly. The 4runner just feels like so much better of a vehicle.

Yeah, this was your 2nd post, you walked into a shit storm of unhappy Toyota truck owners.
I get it though, I keep having to bring mine back, just hit 4k miles trying to get it to drive like a new truck should.
There are some gremlins in the drive train, that said, I'd buy it again if I needed another truck. I would rather the Tundra but I don't want to have to start stealing and pawning shit for gasoline.
It's a great truck and will likely last a long time but now may just be a good time to hold on to your 4R and wait to see if Toyota stops letting Mexico run QA/QC on their best seller.

Keep it. I wish I would have looked harder at the 4Runner. I think most people prefer the drivetrain of the 4Runner over the 3rd gen Tacoma.

I owned a 2014 4Runner Limited and I liked that it has full-time 4WD. It makes handling all roads smoother and takes the guess work out of switching to 4X4 Hi in icy conditions or during heavy rain conditions. I didn't like the 20" wheels (OK for the city folks) and would option for 17'' s (more sidewall is better for the country folks) next time around. I would also switch over to Bilsteins on all fours.

I now have a 2016 4Runner SR5 and have 17" off road tires and Bilsteins 6112 up front and 5100's at the rear with Eibach springs. The SR5 4Runner stock suspension nose dives and feels too bouncey so the suspension upgrades took care of that. The 4Runner Limited stock suspension did not nose dive like the SR5. I have a 2016 Taco with a complete suspension upgrade and off road tire upgrades as well.

Both of my 4Runners handle better than the Taco and is quieter than the Taco. I've never had any issues braking in an emergency situation on the 4Runner or the Taco. Both 4Runner and Taco 4X4 hi & Lo systems are great and an added edge to the 4Runner Limited full-time 4WD system for all around traction and smoothness in city/highway and heavy rain & snowy conditions.

    I hope that helps.

Your 4runner is gonna be worth its weight in gold if they do to the next gen 4runners what they did to the 3rd gen Tacoma.

How are you gonna blame Mexico? Lots of issues from trucks from Texas.
