Having to use hand controls after a 4runner overlap accident merely increases it's overall level of refinement

Exact reason I did not do a cab mount chop on my Runner... I love my 4runner it's an awesome SUV truly one of the last greats but it has it's shortcomings as well. I don't like how the gas tank hangs down low sure it bigger but I would rather have it tucked up higher at the loss of interior space plus the lower links mounts tend to get buggered if you wheel these rigs hard. The shorter wheel base is a plus but all in all owning both I cannot say one is really that much better than the other. I love the interior of the Runner as it's super nice but I like how spartan my Taco is plus the fact it doesn't have carpet.. Any way to each his own one can argue for years on this but they are just some great rigs we are lucky to get here in the states... PS my 1st gen daily driver Taco still has less rattles than both these trucks and it's twice as old as both of them put together  Some pics of my turkeys below...

I found eating roast beef through a straw to be very refined.

Once you’ve had a truck bed it’s hard to go back lol. My last 4Runner was an ‘87 some 20 years ago so my apples to apples comparison is pretty dated, but I got into my Taco after owning a Yukon XL Denali (which I traded a 2500 Duramax for) and it’s sooo nice having a truck bed again. Stinky riding gear? Who cares. Greasy tractor parts? Who cares. Leaky bag of mulch? Who cares. Can’t beat a pickup bed! (I’m also married with 3 kids and a dog, drive 4K miles a month and the double cab is just fine for 90% of my needs).

I agree. In my opinion, the 4-door mid size pickup is the ultimate “do everything marginally well” vehicle form factor. It’s a compromise at everything it does, but I’ve got a lot of different things I expect my vehicle to do (haul dirty crap, commuting and errands, 4-wheeling, road tripping, transporting family, hobby mod vehicle for fun, impress the ladies, etc), and the Tacoma does all of these tasks marginally well, as opposed to being stellar at any one thing.

Man, I love the Tacoma versus 4Runner threads. Just buy both already.

Agreed. Mid size 4d trucks are far more of a "sports utility" vehicle than SUVs are.

I keep hoping a “battle of the 4.0s” will erupt between the 5G Runner owners and the 2G Taco owners in one of these threads so us 3G Taco people can be left alone for a few minutes to enjoy our funky trucks.

Having owned both, no question keep the 4Runner.

    Don’t leave the fourbangersmen out.

    We need a 2.7 3G vs 2.4 1G as well.

This. Our '16 4R is awesome, but I'll never get rid if my '14 taco either. The 4R is more refined and factory build quality is far superior than my truck.

I test drove a trd pro 4runner and a trd pro Tacoma before buying. The 4runner felt like a tank, the car felt heavy and slow. I vote Tacoma obviously

    +1 on the manual
