OP if you got the funds I say go for it. I didn't NEED 4x4 either, but the last truck I had was 2wd and I regretted it the entire time I owned it. Is it for my ego? yup, but I DGAF.

I think it's totally your decision...But I will say this, and please take it as food for thought:

If you're asking yourself this question now, and you don't get the 4x4, there will come a time, down some trail or on some steep slick boat ramp, when you'll find yourself saying "I wish I had 4WD right now."

The Pre-Runners are very capable, properly equipped. And to be totally honest, if I were in the southeast (I was born and raised in Virginia--live in Alaska now), I would have bought a Pre-Runner instead of the 4x4. But I don't do any heavy off-roading in the truck, just far enough to get to where I off-load my ATVs for hunting/fishing/riding.

That's my opinion FWIW. Good luck with your decision.

Buy yourself an old 85 yota 4x4 for 3-4k, and make it your beater. Solid front axle, and a 22re. Keep your overhead low, and have a vehicle where upgrades are so plentiful it will make your head spin. When i was faced with this same dilema I went and bought an 88 4x4, and couldn't be happier.

Living where you do the only reason to need a 4X4 is for play.Resale value in the south is little difference between a 4X4 and 4x2 except you pay $3000 more for a 4X4 and get $3000 more out of it when you trade. In the north snow country you can't give a 4X2 away. When I moved to SC I traded my 4X4 for a prerunner. They sent my 4X4 up north because there is little demand for a 4X4 here.Prices go up with demand.

I am leaning heavily toward keeping this truck and getting a winch bumper at this point. I know you can get away with using a comealong and all but i really like the look and extra clearance of bumpers like relentlessfabs

What about the many places where winching isn't an option?

The correct answer is get 4x4 AND a winch.

It seems to be pretty hard to find 4x4's around here apparently. I found a total of 2 new ones in the nearest 5 dealerships, and no used ones. I'm starting to think people are onto something with the whole buy an old Yota thing. I'd like my Prerunner to be decently capable with the winch, and if was gonna start getting into running hardcore trails and shit I'd definitely get a different vehicle to do that in.

OP , you would be crazy NOT to get a 4x4 .

    Prerunners are poser trucks

If you can afford it or have a need for it, go for the 4x4.

My locked Prerunner has gone everywhere and done everything I have asked it too. Only gotten stuck twice and both times it was driver error, not a lack of 4x4 that screwed me.
